While the upcoming Holiday season is often full of celebrating with friends and family, many people also want to connect and help others in our community. If you are called to serve, here are a few local organizations that could use your assistance:
Lowcountry Food Bank
The Lowcountry Food Bank serves Charleston County and several other parts of the Lowcountry, and partners with numerous groups and food pantries across Charleston County to distribute food to those who need it. The Lowcountry Food Bank accepts financial donations to purchase food and fund its operations. Volunteers are also needed to help pack and sort food and assist programs and distributions. Children over the age of 12 are welcome to volunteer and group volunteering opportunities are available.
East Cooper Community Outreach
East Cooper Outreach (ECCO) is a local outreach group serving those who live or work East of the Cooper and who are experiencing financial distress and/or a variety of other challenges. ECCO offers the opportunity to “adopt” a family for the Holidays, and accepts financial donations to support its food, clothing, medical and education outreach. ECCO also needs volunteers to sort food and clothing donations, staff its Wellness Pantry, and to operate the front desk.
Sea Island Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing, rehabilitating and preserving homes, and advocating for fair and just housing policies. The Sea Island affiliate is the third oldest in the United States and serves communities on James, Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. Sea Island Habitat accepts donations of home furniture and appliances, and welcomes financial donations as well. Volunteers are needed to help work on weekly home construction projects (no experience needed!), or to staff the ReStore.
