No Decision in Columbia
Last week, abortion rights went to the South Carolina courts for review again. After no agreement could be made, McMaster’s six week ban would go into effect, but since the SC Supreme Court suspended that action until a review of the law could be made, abortions remain legal in our state through 5½ months as per a 2016 law signed by then-Gov. Nikki Haley.
Everything resets and all bills must start from the beginning of the legislative process in January.
Congratulations, JA Moore!
SC State House District 15
Moms for Liberty and the Charleston School Board
Last week, Erica Coakley was re-elected to the Charleston County School Board in District 6 (West Ashley); however, she is unable to serve in the non-partisan position and a replacement must be appointed by the SC Governor and the Charleston County Legislative delegation. Moms for Liberty, a conservative education group that advocates for extreme policies on culture-war issues and censorship in public schools, is organizing its members to lobby the Governor and Charleston County legislators. The group has called on its members to advocate for a nominee who would be more in line with their conservative values.
Moms for Liberty has already succeeded in electing five of its preferred candidates to the Charleston County School Board, and having a stronger majority could further embolden their conservative Board members to enact policies that are out of line with mainstream values and educational practices. Please contact your state representative, state senator, and the Governor to share your opinions about having a Moms for Liberty appointee to District 6’s seat on the Charleston School Board.
