You did the work. We stopped the “red wave.”
Hi Indivisibles,
Turns out there’s a whole lot to celebrate – Democrats picked up a seat in the Senate; as we write this Sunday evening control of the House is still unresolved! We held the Senate and we prevented election deniers from seizing control of election processes in advance of 2024. And where we worked with our time and with our dollars mattered.
In August we rallied at Central Park to kick-off our MidTerm electoral work where we told you about our strategy to focus on Arizona, Nevada and here in the Central Valley – our national organizations were working in other battleground states: PA, WI, NC, etc. – and we would focus here on our own region.
Federal Elections
So far, here’s what we know pertaining to Federal elections.
In ARIZONA:
- Mark Kelly won his Senate seat for a full term
- Adrian Fontes won Secretary of State
In NEVADA … where we registered voters, canvassed in addition to all the postcards, texts and phone calls:
- Catherine Cortez-Masto won re-election to the Senate
- Cisco Aguilar won Secretary of State
In CALIFORNIA
- Josh Harder is leading in his new CA09 district
- Cook Political Report’s Dave Wassermnan reported that control of the house comes down to 5 key congressional districts .. with a projected count of 213 D – 217 R, we need to run the table including 3 of the 4 CA races we focused on with texts, phone calls and canvassing in CD22. According to the Washington Post:
- TOSS UP CA13:
- “Adam Gray is behind in the vote count, but slightly favored to win after all votes are counted. Duarte still has a chance.”
- TOSS UP CA22:
- “Rudy Salas is behind in the vote count, but slightly favored to win after all votes are counted. Valadao still has a chance.”
- TOSS UP CA41:
- “Calvert is slightly favored to win, but Rollins still has a chance.”
- TOSS UP CA13:
Winning in the States
All of your postcards, your donations, your calls, and your texts made a DIFFERENCE. Your work is why we are 4 for 4 in our state legislative races. And the work we did rolled up to influence top of the ticket races in AZ and NV.
- BRITTNEY MILLER now joins a new Democratic SUPERMAJORITY in the Nevada state legislature that can pass legislation even over the Republican governor’s veto.
- JASMINE CLARK continues to speak out against election deniers…and her work to protect abortion rights and expand sex education in her changing state…her Twitter feed is on fire!.
- JUDY SCHWIEBERT is a champion for public education and will work with the DEMOCRATIC superintendent of education to turn Arizona schools around.
- MITZI EPSTEIN has a powerful new position as part of the all-women Democratic leadership team in the State Senate. A voice she’ll use to fight FOR abortion rights and AGAINST anti-Black and anti-Semitic extremism.
Analysis
So what happened? In a nutshell, we happened!
How did we succeed?
First, despite the conventional wisdom that abortion and democracy wouldn’t resonate with voters concerned more about the economy, the message was clear – call out MAGA extremists and election deniers (don’t ignore them), and Dobbs underscored what can happen to individual rights if they win.
Second, after much wrangling the Democrats delivered – legislatively and with executive action Not the complete progressive package but proof of progress – and far more than any recent administration in its first two years.
Third, and this is the most important point to everyone in this room, grassroots Dems and organizations delivered in the field! We delivered! We wrote postcards, we wrote letters to the editor and made direct contact with texts and phone calls – and, with Covid receding, were finally able to get back to in-person contact, registering voters and canvassing in NV and in the Central Valley.
All the progressive messaging and the advocacy work we did in 2021 and earlier this year to push for as much as we got from what looked like a gridlocked Democratic majority has been vindicated. The naysayers who attacked Biden as out of touch for talking about the threat to democracy that mega MAGA candidates posed, and that given 2 more Senators, he’d see to it that we codified Roe, were perhaps, themselves, out of touch.
Summary
Our joint electoral team delivered! As part of Sister District…as part of Indivisible…we are a part of a nationwide effort with hundreds of thousands of volunteers working at every level to rebuild our country. Our cooperation here at the local level is just one example of how grassroots volunteers all across our country are taking back our democracy one step, one race at a time.
And, in 2023-24, we are going to do it all over again.
THANK YOU!!!
Kelly Wilkerson, Steve Murphy and Linda Cloud
