Replacing the Refs. Across the country, politicians who continue to spread lies about our elections are seeking control over future elections. If these Election Deniers succeed, they could have the power to interfere with nonpartisan election administration and put our free, fair, and secure elections at risk. – States United
A Secretary of state can take anti-democracy actions. Engage in unprofessional or partisan reviews of election results; fail to issue election guidance or issue guidance that restricts voter access in contravention of applicable laws; advocate for legislation that adds barriers to voter access and voting options; and certify election results that do not reflect the official winners of the election. – States United Democracy

American democracy under threat
Across the country, politicians who continue to spread lies about our elections are seeking control over future elections. If these Election Deniers succeed, they could try to interfere with nonpartisan election administration and put our free, fair, and secure elections at risk. The Replacing the Refs tracker follows Election Deniers running for governor, secretary of state, and attorney general in 2022. These state officials are the referees of our democracy. They run elections, supervise vote counts, certify results, and defend the will of the voters in court.
Election Deniers are running on lies and conspiracy theories, and they are a threat to our democracy. The state officials we elect this year will oversee the 2024 election. Giving Election Deniers that power would be like putting arsonists in charge of the fire department. – States United
Secretaries of States protect democracy
Secretaries of state have key roles and responsibilities in several aspects of voting procedures and election administration and certification. The secretary of state administers and oversees state election administration, including:
- Certification and logic and accuracy testing of voting systems,
- Voter registration procedures and databases,
- Vote by mail applications,
- Voter education materials and hotlines,
- Guidance and support to local election officials, and
- Certification of election results.
DASS is fighting to protect our democracy. Secretaries of State were center stage during the 2020 election, from ensuring that all votes were counted properly to providing administrative support for fair and accessible voting. Since then, extremists have spread lies about the results in an attempt to undermine our election system and change the rules to their advantage. Over 500 bills have been introduced in state legislatures that restrict the right to vote, and now, these Big Lie advocates are running to oversee elections themselves. By changing the rules and changing the players, they hope to change the outcomes of future elections. Democratic Secretaries of State are pushing back, serving as the last line of defense to protect our democracy and preserve the will of the voters.
