SC Senate Votes to Add Restrictions to Existing Abortion Law

After a contentious debate, the South Carolina Senate voted to reduce the safeguards that women in South Carolina currently enjoy when seeking an abortion. Although a majority of Republicans voted for a complete abortion ban, Democrats and a small minority of Republicans joined together in a filibuster to force lesser restrictions on a woman’s ability to procure an abortion.

The Senate bill (S.1) totally bans abortion as early as 4 weeks into the pregnancy, and only allows exceptions for rape or incest up to 14 weeks into the pregnancy. Fatal fetal abnormalities would need to be diagnosed by two physicians, and doctors performing the abortion would be required to preserve DNA samples from the fetal remains for their local sherriff.

The Senate bill S.1 is now going back to the SC House and can be adopted and signed by the Governor into law. Please contact your state representative to let them know your feelings about the new Senate bill.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham Proposes Nationwide Abortion Restrictions

Yesterday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham proposed federal restrictions on abortion access. Sen. Graham has introduced a bill that would ban abortion across the entire United States after 15 weeks. Individual states would be permitted to pass even more restrictive bans. Please let both of our Republican US Senators how you feel about nationwide abortion restrictions at the link below.
