IC-SS Weekly Update: July 25, 2022

LET’S ACT & Interact: Join Us at the Nile!

Do you look at the news and feel overwhelmed? Heat waves in China and Europe. Wisconsin ban on ballot drop boxes. More people shot in our communities.Trump fomenting an insurrection. Denial of basic freedoms in state after state.

But we are not helpless. We can pressure our elected leaders. We can protest in the street. We can help elect Democrats and progressives to US Congress and to state houses alike. Let’s keep working together.

Come to Our Vote Forward Party: Wed. July 27

Please join us at the Nile outdoor patio this Wednesday, July 27th 6:30-9:00 pm for our next Vote Forward Party. Register here!

At our first Vote Forward party, we wrote over 100 letters to be mailed to voters in Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Nevada – key states & districts. These letters will be mailed out – along with many thousands across the country – in time to make a real difference in voter turnout. (Read about the impact of Vote Forward here & here.)

Register here. Then meet us –  and our Vote Forward champ, Steve Kagan – this Wednesday at the outdoor patio of the Nile, 1162 E 55th St. IC-SS will spring for appetizers and bring wine.

Feel free to bring wine/beer and to purchase your own food or soft drinks to support the Nile. If you wish, you can donate first-class stamps and bring along pens, highlighters, and stickers to personalize the letters you complete.

And if you’re already signed up with Vote Forward, you are welcome to print out and bring your own letters. But you can register and attend without bringing a thing. Register here. See you Wednesday evening!

Two Petitions to Sign for Democracy

Sign two petitions for democracy, and then commit to do more to fight for our country:
1. Sign petitions.
2. Take on another action: writing letters to voters, phoning voters, texting voters, or talking to voters door to door. Find opportunities here and here.

Sign Petition to Sen Durbin: Fill Every Seat

Tell Senator Durbin: Don’t give McConnell a chance to block Biden’s judges! The possibility is looming that Mitch McConnell will regain control of the Senate — and then Republicans would block President Biden from filling open judicial vacancies. So we have to fill every seat now.

But Democrats are on track to leave 60 judicial vacancies open at the end of this year, so we’re calling on Senate Judiciary Chair, Senator Dick Durbin, to push beyond current norms and recent practices and schedule more hearings, with even more nominees to #FillEverySeat.

ACT: Sign the Demand Justice + Indivisible Chicago petition to tell Senator Durbin to Fill Every Seat: bit.ly/FillEverySeat

Sign Public Citizen Petition: Prosecute Trump

From Public Citizen: After eight public hearings from the January 6th Committee, the evidence is clear. Donald Trump led a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 Election, which culminated in violence at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Donald Trump and his allies must be held accountable.

ACT: Add your name to demand prosecution for Trump and his allies: bit.ly/ProsecuteDJT

People, Power, Progress: Let’s Act Together.

Make a difference in Illinois, Michigan, and the pivotal state of Wisconsin. One way to get active is via the citywide Indivisible Chicago Alliance (ICA).

IC-SS Co-Leader Sarah Lincoln with Bill Mengebier & some of the Indivisible Chicago team who knocked 100s of doors in SW Michigan, talking to voters about issues they care about in this key battleground state.

Rally to End Torture at Menard Prison: Mon. Aug 1

From CAARPR:Join CAARPR downtown on Monday, August 1st at 6:00 PM at 190 N. State St. to demand an end to the torture at Menard Prison. Our loved ones held at Menard have experienced harassment, mistreatment, neglect, abuse, repression, and, in the case of Michael Jefferson and many more, death at the hands of Menard staff and the Illinois Department of “Corrections” (IDOC).

We are calling on IDOC Director Rob Jeffreys and Governor Pritzker to act NOW to address these conditions and bring our loved ones home!

Our demands are:

  • Transfer Michael Minnifield, Isaiah Brady, and Chaz Thrailkill out of Menard immediately!
  • Conduct an independent investigation into the conditions at Menard!
  • Pass the Isolated Confinement Restriction Act HB 3564 NOW!
  • Hold guards who have abused our loved ones accountable!
  • Shut Down Menard!

We ask all those who are able to come out and join us as we bring these demands forward in a demonstration. We need every person who can to join us in raising these demands, until Rob Jeffreys and JB Pritzker ACT to address the needs of our loved ones, and until this crisis has the attention it needs.

Meet & Support Lauren Underwood Online, Aug 2

From Deb Rosenberg (a friend of our group): My husband, Peter Scheff, and I are on the host committee for an online fundraiser and conversation with Congresswoman Lauren Underwood on Tuesday, August 2, from 5:00-6:00 pm and we’re hoping you’ll join us on Zoom. RSVP

The host committee has asked Lauren to engage with us in a substantive conversation about the current political situation and her perspective on the November elections.

Democrats currently have only a four-seat margin in the House, and with five battleground seats in Illinois alone, keeping Lauren Underwood’s seat is essential to maintaining a Democratic majority in Congress.

Two terms into her service, Lauren Underwood continues to make us proud. It’s on us to make sure she has the resources she needs to be successful in 2022.

Join Deb Rosenberg and the committee online on Tuesday August 2nd, 5:00-6:00 pmRSVP / DONATE HERE. If you’d rather donate with a check, please make it payable to “Lauren Underwood for Congress” and send to: 13400 S. Route 59, Suite 116, Box 248, Plainfield, IL 60585.
