BADASS Briefings, July 21, 2022

12 mins read

We all know that the only way forward is the vote and our midterms are right around the corner.  Many indications are that Democrats will once again gain the support of Americans who believe in DEMOCRACY and individual rights.  We must make sure this happens by pulling out all stops. Join us on the Friday Power Lunch to get inspired by several national groups who are working to mobilize the grassroots for the midterms and make your your action plans to secure a Democratic controlled House and Senate!

Information for the Rural Valley Summit is at the bottom of the email, however there is daily activity in the new ALL in to WIN Virginia online experience for the same price as a ticket to either of the two remaining events : $35.  You get full access to all workshops, panels, interest groups, and ongoing networking. Join us to be ALL IN to Win, Virginia.

How can an out-of-state group be most effective? This is a question Brooklyn, NY-based Red2Blue has been grappling with since its founding in 2016. They have helped their large volunteer base support Democrats running for state and local office through postcard writing, phone banking, and texting. In fact, Red2Blue has been writing postcards for Virginia candidates since 2017. After the devastating loss in Virginia in 2021, they re-evaluated their focus and now are putting the majority of their focus on voter registration. Isabel Byron and Craig Seligman from Red2Blue will tell us about their exciting work with the New Pennsylvania Project, modeled after Stacey Abrams’ New Georgia Project that resulted in 100% voter registration in Georgia after 10 years. You’ll want to hear how they are gathering and using voter data so that volunteers now love phone banking….yes, you heard that right!

Ronnie Cohen, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Activate America, will speak about how her group that started in California in 2017 has since expanded beyond California and western states to help House and Senate candidates from coast to coast. Activate America plugs volunteers into direct voter contact with postcards, texting, phone banking, and canvassing. In the 2020 election cycle, volunteers made over 13 million voter contacts – helping flip four Senate seats in Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia–at a cost of only 9¢ per voter contact – a fraction of what others spend. Activate America knows the key to victory is having an empowered volunteer activist base. Ronnie will update us on their 2022 priorities.

With all the noise on social media, it’s a big challenge to get our messages heard. Since 2019, DemCast has become the digital hub of the left, building a volunteer social media army to be the voice of truth and justice and call out hypocrisy and lies. Nick Knudsen, Executive Director of DemCast, will talk about their new program Mobilize for the Midterms and how to win the messaging challenges in 2022 by adopting a more focused election messaging strategy along with the best social media tools.

**Calls To Action**

Please pause to take action & share! * indicates new this week.

  • Sadly, this term the US Supreme Court gutted the Clean Water Act, gutted the EPA, and ignored the experts on the existential threat of climate change. We must act. Email your senators HERE.
  • Advocate for Campaign Finance Reform in Virginia
  • Volunteer with Rideshare2Vote – Rideshare2Vote is again offering free rides to the polls for  Democrats in Virginia.  They try to service any voter from any area of the state, yet primary focus is in Northern Virginia (Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria etc. on down to Fredericksburg), the Charlottesville area, Richmond and surrounding counties, and the Hampton Roads area (City of Hampton, City of Norfolk, and City of Virginia Beach primarily).  They had many more ride requests than drivers in these  critical areas in 2021 and want to be fully prepared to drive every voter in November 2022! Training is available to drivers on their smartphone app that connects drivers and voters and directs the drivers to the correct pickup and voting locations – trainings are held online throughout the summer. We will drive for at least 1 week of early voting plus election day, November 8.  Please help us make sure no Democratic voter gets left behind!  Register to volunteer as a driver, phone banker, or dispatch operator HERE. Contact: Tracy Scott – 713.922.0955.
