IC-SS Weekly Update: July 18, 2022

Moving Forward with Vote Forward

IC-SS is helping to get out the vote! Thanks to everyone who came to the Nile last week to reconnect and to write Vote Forward letters to people in key states and districts, in preparation for the big get-out-the-vote push for the midterm elections.

Together we wrote over 100 letters, to be mailed to voters in Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Nevada in advance of Election Day, November 8.

Writing to 100 voters: Joyce Mannis, Marva Watkins, Esther Peters, Barbara Brotman, Meredith Conn,Vote Forward champion Steve Kagan, Irene Claude, Alexandria Suchy-Mabrouk, Nate Hauger, Richard Pardo.
Not pictured: Teri Watkins, Lillian Eckstein. Special thanks to Lisa Rademacher for her support.

Our Vote Forward champion Steve Kagan cited the data showing that writing letters to voters has an observable impact on elections. He explained how Vote Forward works and encouraged everyone to sign up to get their own free Vote Forward account and start writing letters from home.

Join Us Again at the Nile on Wed., July 27

Steve Kagan and the letter writers have decided to continue writing letters to voters together, meeting every other Wednesday, and we invite YOU to join.

Next gathering: Wednesday, July 27th, 6:30-9:00 pm at the Nile, 1162 E 55th St. IC-SS will spring for appetizers and bring wine. Register here!

Feel free to bring wine or beer and to purchase your own food or soft drinks to support the Nile. If you wish, you can donate first-class stamps and bring along pens, highlighters, and stickers to personalize the letters you complete.

And if you sign up with Vote Forward, you can print out and bring your own letters in advance. But you can register and attend without bringing a thing. Register here.

 Help Re-Elect Rep. Lauren Underwood

We must hang on to every Democratic seat – and work especially hard for Democrats like Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, who fights for her district and for the issues we care about including reproductive rights, health care, and gun violence prevention.

With her election wins in 2018 and 2020, Rep. Underwood became the only Democrat EVER to be re-elected from Illinois’s 14th Congressional District, and she is also the youngest Black woman ever elected to Congress. Read Lauren Underwood’s Long Game in Chicago Magazine — about her role as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

Lauren Underwood won her 2020 race – but by little more than 1 percentage point. Rep. Underwood is facing a tough re-election fight in 2022 and needs our help.

Accomplishments: Rep. Underwood has passed seven pieces of legislation since 2018, and her Healthcare Affordability Act was included in President Biden’s American Rescue Plan. She co-founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus to combat the disparities in health outcomes experienced by Black moms. Along with colleagues in the House and Senate, Lauren introduced a package of 12 bills to save moms’ lives: the Black Maternal Health Omnibus Act of 2021.

The challenge. Since the last election, districts have been redrawn; IL-14 is now made up of 70% new territory, and it has two new media markets. That means there are thousands of new voters to communicate with, many of whom have never even heard of Lauren or what she has accomplished in Congress.

Help Lauren Underwood stay and fight for us in Congress:
1. Phone voters every Tuesday, 6:00-8:00 pm: Join friendly folks from Indivisible Chicago Alliance to call voters – from home – in Rep Underwood’s district. You get training, support, and camaraderie via Zoom. (And you might see Sarah Lincoln, Teri Watkins, or other familiar faces.) More info/sign up.

2. Find other volunteer options. See multiple opportunities to reach voters by phone or door to door here.
Thanks to Deb Rosenberg for supplying some of the info & wording in this section!

People, Power, Progress: Let’s Act Together.

Make a difference in Illinois, Michigan, and the pivotal state of Wisconsin. One way to get active is via the citywide Indivisible Chicago Alliance (ICA).

Sign Petition to Sen Durbin: Fill Every Seat

Tell Senator Durbin: Don’t give McConnell a chance to block Biden’s judges! The possibility is looming that Mitch McConnell will regain control of the Senate — and then Republicans would block President Biden from filling open judicial vacancies. So we have to fill every seat now.

But Democrats are on track to leave 60 judicial vacancies open at the end of this year, so we’re calling on Senate Judiciary Chair, Senator Dick Durbin, to push beyond current norms and recent practices and schedule more hearings, with even more nominees to #FillEverySeat.

ACT: Sign the Demand Justice + Indivisible Chicago petition to tell Senator Durbin: Fill Every Seat: bit.ly/FillEverySeat

Meet & Support Lauren Underwood Online, Aug 2

From Deb Rosenberg (a friend of our group): My husband, Peter Scheff, and I are on the host committee for an online fundraiser and conversation with Congresswoman Lauren Underwood on Tuesday, August 2, from 5:00-6:00 pm and we’re hoping you’ll join us on Zoom. RSVP

The host committee has asked Lauren to engage with us in a substantive conversation about the current political situation and her perspective on the November elections.

Democrats currently have only a four-seat margin in the House, and with five battleground seats in Illinois alone, keeping Lauren Underwood’s seat is essential to maintaining a Democratic majority in Congress.
Two terms into her service, Lauren Underwood continues to make us proud. It’s on us to make sure she has the resources she needs to be successful in 2022.
Join Deb Rosenberg and the committee online on Tuesday August 2nd, 5:00-6:00 pmRSVP / DONATE HERE. If you’d rather donate with a check, please make it payable to “Lauren Underwood for Congress” and send to: 13400 S. Route 59, Suite 116, Box 248, Plainfield, IL 60585.
