What Expected Supreme Court Rulings Mean For You

Women enslaved to make babies.

Women have lost all their rights and are forced into sexual servitude in Margaret Atwood’s book The Handmaid’s Tale. Commanders and husbands hold ceremonies to rape their handmaids and force them to carry their baby until birth. Birth control, contraception and IVF are banned under penalty of death.

Republicans are changing America into the Handmaid’s Tale. Far fetched? A GOP-packed Supreme Court has overturned Roe v Wade ending the right to abortion. Contraceptives restricted. Voting suppressed… Consider how the GOP is changing America into The Handmaid’s Tale.

Check this satire for your future in an Republican Handmaid’s Tale. And remember to vote in the 2022 midterms for your freedom to choose when and with whom to have a family!

Extremist Christian Government

Hulu adapted Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale about a woman’s attempt to survive as a fertility slave in a dystopian society. It starts to feel almost spookily relevant to the current political landscape. As Americans contemplate the state of our democracy, and whether it’s strong enough to hold up in the face of an extremist Republicans, the show explores the question of how exactly a country becomes the kind of place where its women are enslaved for their reproductive qualities and how its people will behave when it happens.

An extremist Christian government has assumed power and divided women into castes based on their ability to bear children. Offred is among the rare fertile women remaining, and as such has been made a handmaid—her role, along with the others in her class, is to have sex with her “commander” and bear him the child that his infertile wife can’t.

Lesbians have been reclassified as “unwomen”; women are blamed for their own rapes; open disrespect of the authorities can literally cost you an eye, or worse.”- Adapted from WMagazine

Republicans only care for a baby till it’s born

  • Republican Ohio state Rep. Jean Schmidt, who is recorded saying pregnancies caused by rapes are an “opportunity”.
  • Arizona Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters stated he would not elect a judge unless they vote against Griswold v. Connecticut, which would overturn the right to use contraceptives. This would not only outlaw contraceptives for birth control, but also for regulating periods, managing painful and dangerous disorders like PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) and endometriosis and lowering the risk of reproductive cancers.
  • Such actions are not about being “pro-life” but rather about controlling women.
  • 192 Republicans voted against an emergency spending act to help get baby formula back on the shelves due to the recent baby formula shortage, proving that they only care about the “baby” when it is in the womb.
  • So if it’s not about saving the women, and clearly not about saving the babies, then what is it about?
  • Control, and maybe even far worse than that. Once Roe v Wade is overturned, there is no reason to think that many other rights could have the same storm coming.

Politicians in Supreme Court robes

The Republican packed Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade killing the constitutional right to abortion, upheld for nearly a half century. The decision was 6-3 with all the Republican appointed Justices voting for the measure and all Democratic appointed justices voting against it. (So you still think elections don’t matter?).

“The decision means that abortion rights will be rolled back in nearly half of the states immediately, with more restrictions likely to follow. For all practical purposes, abortion will not be available in large swaths of the country. The translation of all that is that states appear to be completely free to ban abortions for any reason… Justice Thomas said the legal rationale for Friday’s decision could be applied to overturn other major cases, including those that legalized gay marriage, barred the criminalization of consensual homosexual conduct, and protected the rights of married people to have access to contraception.

Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan dissented. “Young women today will come of age with fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers.” Indeed, they said the court’s opinion means that “from the very moment of fertilization, a woman has no rights to speak of. A state can force her to bring a pregnancy to term even at the steepest personal and familial costs. With sorrow — for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection — we dissent,” they wrote.” – NPR

Inform. Call to act.

This infographic was created with the free Infogram app using images from The Handmaid’s Tale, a Hulu show and research from these articles:

  • Roe v. Wade’s potential overturn feels eerily familiar to “The Handmaid’s Tale” – The Michigan Daily
  • In a Dystopia Not Far From Our Own… – W Magazine

  • Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, ending right to abortion upheld for decades – NPR

This satire isn’t meant just to amuse or shock. It’s meant to present a vision of what could easily happen given Republican and their packed Supreme Court is doing, and remind the reader of the importance of voting. This is done with a ‘roll over’. As you move your mouse over an image, a message appears. ‘What can you do to prevent this from happening?’. Clicking on the image sends you the #VoteProChoice website with a list of Pro Choice candidates.
