Updates from the Campaign Trail here in Ohio

11 mins read

The Ohio Scoop is your weekly campaign fix, filled with the most up-to-date information about Ohio Democrats and everything happening on the campaign trail here in Ohio. We’re here so you can get your political scoop, all in one place.

If you’re new to the list, welcome. You were added because you are one of Ohio Democrats’ best supporters. For those of you who are returning, welcome back.

We had a busy week on the campaign trail, so let’s jump right in.

Ohio Democrats Family Reunion

On Friday, July 15, the annual ODP State Event will return as the Ohio Democrats Family Reunion. Next week’s Scoop will have more information about how you can buy tickets and/or sponsor the event. We can’t wait to see you back in person with our family from all over Ohio.

🚨 POLL ALERT🚨

new poll released on Thursday from Innovation Ohio shows Tim Ryan leading California Vance 44-41.

The Poll also found that Vance has the support of JUST 79% of Republican voters compared to the 91% of Democrats who say they support Tim Ryan. Vance’s own voters know he is a fraud and phony.

Control of the U.S. Senate is going to come down to Ohio. Click here to help ensure Tim defeats Vance this November.

The Ohio Workers First Campaign is the coordinated campaign of community organizers who will work to elect Democrats up and down the ballot – from the U.S. Senate to statewide offices to county and local offices. The Workers First Campaign will work in tandem with candidates at all levels to tell the story of how Democrats are fighting for working families with the goal of turning out the vote for Democrats this fall.

The Workers First Campaign had an action packed week in Ohio filled with door knocking, county organizational meetings, candidate training sessions, and voter registration. Our team of field organizers are now in every corner of Ohio, talking to voters about the issues facing their families and how Democrats will deliver for them.

The team in Columbus is growing by the day, and we are looking for donations for office supplies for our new staff. If you are able to donate gently used rolling chairs, folding tables, lightweight desks, couches, mini fridges, and other general office supplies in the area, please email mlee@ohiodems.org and we will coordinate the details from there.

Sign up to help Democrats up and down the ticket by volunteering with the Workers First Campaign.

JD’s Dumpster Fire Campaign

This week, Ron Verb, a Youngstown radio host, tore into J.D. Vance for his “horrible campaign and said he needs to “get off his ass and start moving. It’s a horrible campaign so far that he’s doing.” Over the course of the two-hour live show, numerous callers dialed in to pile on about Vance’s abysmal campaign and the fact hardly anyone in Ohio has seen him since last month’s primary.

One caller chimed in (at the 49-minute mark), “Where is J.D. Vance?” He continued, “Whoever’s running his campaign needs to get fired immediately… he’s [Vance’s] gonna lose if he doesn’t step it up.”

Another caller (at the 59-minute mark) actually reached out to Vance’s campaign to beg him to show some signs of life in public.

It’s not the first time Vance has been called out for his abysmal campaign. In the primary, Ben Shapiro called out Vance for his pandering in the Republican primary that he believed would hurt the party’s chances in November. He is “deeply worried” about Republicans losing the race because of the lackluster field of candidates.

This is the latest fissure in a still-fractured GOP in the wake of Vance’s lackluster win, which Vance himself has admitted left “a lot of Republican voters with hurt feelings.”

Meanwhile, Tim Ryan has been to all 88 counties across the state. This weekend, you can catch him at the International Community Festival in Akron.

Hypocra-Sea Salted GOP

Mike DeWine is once again touting statewide grants for law enforcement. The problem? DeWine opposed the legislation passed by Democrats that made this funding possible. The funding grant for crime prevention programs and police departments across Ohio comes from the American Rescue Plan, legislation that was passed by Sherrod Brown, Tim Ryan, and Ohio Democrats. Mike DeWine said he would have voted against the legislation in March 2021.

It’s another example of DeWine’s desperation and hypocrisy, using Democratic accomplishments to try to stay relevant. Sadly, it’s DeWine’s latest pathetic campaign stunt, a stunt that uses Ohio law enforcement as a political pawn.

You have to give it to him – the hypocrite running our state has no shame.

Democratic Governor Scoop

While Governor Mike DeWine is busy campaigning on the American Rescue Plan funding he opposed, Nan Whaley is proposing solutions to help ease the cost of inflation for working Ohioans. Nan announced a plan to make an investment with American Rescue Plan funding to send an inflation rebate of $350 to every middle-class Ohioan.

Endorsement Alert

Nan Whaley received two major labor endorsements this week: Ohio Federation of Teachers & Ohio AFL-CIO. See the full list of Nan Whaley and Cheryl Stephens’ endorsements here.

Also this week, The Spaghetti “Wherehouse” weighed in on the Ohio Gov race.

Happy Pride Month, family. This month, we will be featuring LGBTQ candidates across Ohio. First up, Nelsonville City Auditor and candidate for Auditor of State, Taylor Sappington.

Taylor Sappington is Ohio’s first openly gay statewide candidate to win the nomination of a major political party. He received national headlines when he uncovered the city’s largest theft and fraud scheme ever, just eight weeks on the job. That’s what makes Taylor the perfect candidate to catch the crooks and balance the books.

Flavor of the Week from Taylor Sappington

Democrats around Ohio love Taylor Sappington so much, we decided to re-feature his Flavor of the Week.

We asked State Auditor Candidate Taylor Sappington about his favorite Ohio ice cream.

“I’m more of a donut guy, and am excited to be making my way through the Butler County Donut Trail every time I stop down that way. But I’d never turn down a scoop of Cookies ‘N Cream.”

A hot take from a cool candidate. See how Taylor Sappington will balance the books and catch the crooks here.

Until Next Week

Summer is here and time is ticking for us to win this November.

We have a lot of work to do to get more field organizers on the ground in every corner of the state. We have offices to open, phones banks to hold, canvasses to launch, and of course – thousands of unregistered Democrats to register by Election Day. To do this, we need your help and we need it now. Please consider contributing as much as you can to help build the infrastructure needed to win.

If you’re unsure about how much you can still contribute to help us win in November and beyond, simply reply to this email. My team will respond with what you can still do to help us grow the team.

As always, thank you for standing with us. We are so grateful for your incredible support.

I hope to see you out on the campaign trail,

Tommy Greene
Ice Cream Connoisseur and ODP Senior Advisor
