Hello Ventura Indivisians,

This Sunday is Swap Meet Justice, our FREE Immigration Legal Aid Fair held every last Sunday of the month at the Oxnard College Marketplace. If you haven’t volunteered with us yet, this is the Sunday to do it! It will be a Halloween/Day of the Dead extravaganza! New volunteers should arrive at 8:30 for training.

More information here or after the Calls to Action section in this newsletter.

After your calls to action – more events and resources!

Your Calls to Action:
It’s time to pass our budget reconciliation priorities! Contact your senators! Let’s Build Back Better! (more info)
Action #1: Call our Senators

Mini-script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Sen. [___] to commit to passing an inclusive recovery through reconciliation, immediately after the House sends over their bill.

We urgently need a recovery bill that lowers prescription drug prices for all Americans, expands Medicare, provides a path to citizenship, and includes generational investments in climate, housing, education and the care economy, including permanent child tax credits without work requirements, and paid family and medical leave – all while making the ultra rich and big corporations pay their fair share through the Billionaires tax at the very minimum. This cannot take a back seat to an inadequate bipartisan bill.

We need the full recovery agenda, and I’ll be watching to ensure that Sen. [___] is fighting for it.

Action #2: Email our Senators

Senator Feinstein: email
and Senator Padilla: email

Action #3: Get your friends and family in Arizona and West Virginia to call their Senators

Mini-script to share: I’m calling from [zip code] and and I’m furious that Senator [Sinema (AZ), Manchin (WV)] has threatened to undermine the budget reconciliation bill currently being written. There’s no excuse for risking urgent proposals like lowering drug prices, strengthening Medicare, universal child care, and climate action. Instead of political stunts, I expect them to support the Democratic agenda.

Senator [Sinema (AZ), Manchin (WV)] must stop obstructing the budget reconciliation bill based on an arbitrary and imaginary price cap. The total investment in regular Americans is long overdue and spread out over 10 years. I’m disappointed with positions [she/he] has taken so far, especially [her opposition to raising the corporate tax rate and marginal income tax rates on the wealthy/ his opposition to the CEPP] and will be watching to see if they change course.Senator Sinema: email, DC (202) 224-4521
Senator Manchin: email, DC (202) 224-3954

There were actually two coup events, Jan 6 was the second one. Time to do some House-cleaning (more info)
The first one happened on Jan. 2nd, where, from their “command center” at the Willard Hotel, Trump and Giuliani spoke by conference call to 300 GOP state legislators, urging them to “decertify” the election results based on alleged fraud. Dozens contacted Pence, despite the continued court losses and lack of evidence. Jan. 2 was also the date of Trump’s mob-boss phone call to GA SOS Raffensberger.

Recent testimony at the Jan. 6 select committee named federal lawmakers directly involved in the insurrection planning, confirming early reports. Rep. Gosar even dangled pre-emptive pardons for organizers. So let’s contact our own legislators and Nancy Pelosi and urge them to clean house.

Mini-script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I have been following the testimony from the Jan. 6 select committee. I want Rep. [___] to do whatever is necessary to expel every legislator implicated in the planning of the Jan. 6 insurrection, including Reps. Paul Gosar, Lauren Boebert, Mo Brooks, Madison Cawthorn, Andy Biggs, and Louie Gohmert. My tax dollars should not be wasted on seditionists.

Rep. Julia Brownley (CA-26): email, DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
or Rep. Salud Carbajal (CA-24): email. DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348
AND Nancy Pelosi email

Ventura County’s Health Care and the Human Services agencies will also be providing information on their programs, including CalFresh and Medi-Cal. In addition, there will be a children’s table with coloring projects to celebrate the festivities of this season.

This fair couldn’t happen without the sponsorship of CLUE-VC, the Migrant Advocacy Fund, the Law Office of Vanessa Frank, El Concilio Family Services, UFW, SEIU 721, and the assistance of volunteer immigration specialists and community members.
