The Beat Goes On In the Bellwether State

Friday, October 15, NOON REGISTER

Virginia is the bellwether state this year. What happens in Virginia on Nov 2nd will reverberate out across the nation foreshadowing what’s to come in 2022. The beat goes on … and the nation needs to hear it. Register here.

We’ll start the show by talking to David J. Toscano who served 14 years (2006-20) in the Virginia House of Delegates representing the 57th District, which includes all of Charlottesville and parts of Albemarle County. David is the author of Fighting Political Gridlock: How States Shape Our Nation and Our Lives  and his upcoming book Bellwether: Comments on Virginia’s Political Transformation, 2006-2020.
Handwritten GOTV postcards and letters are headed to voters throughout Virginia in the next coming weeks. In the second segment, Postcards4VA will make their big announcement of the number of postcards volunteers are mailing to support our candidates. Last year’s reveal was on the very first Friday Power Lunch. Then we will hear from Reid McCollum (Co-Founder of Postcards to Swing States) who will share the findings of their 2020 postcard studies (Spoiler alert, postcards work better than we thought!). Desiree “Des” Newman (CEO) and Mish Davis (COO) of Siren Vibes Records, a new record label out of Richmond bringing artists from Virginia, DC and Maryland to the big stage.
Manisha Singh (Political Director of Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia and Member of VA CD 11 Democratic Committee) will enlighten us about their upcoming Diwali festival and GOTV efforts.
Our candidate spotlight this week is on Candi King (HD2).REGISTER FOR THE FRIDAY POWER LUNCH

Celebration of LGBTQ+ Virginians with Delegates Shelly Simonds & Danica Roem and the Human Rights Campaign

Please join Delegate Shelly Simonds (VA-HD-94) for a virtual fundraiser in support of LGBTQ+ people in Newport News sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign.
Delegate Simonds’s opponent has been running on a platform of bigotry, homophobia, and transphobia throughout his campaign. His beliefs simply have no place in Virginia politics. Delegate Simonds & Roem will discuss the progress the House of Delegates has made towards equality, and in anticipation of everything that these amazing women will continue to achieve in the House of Delegates next year. Donate/register for Zoom link here.

Alex Askew Canvass Extravaganza in Virginia Beach

Join Sharon Shutler, Luisa Boyarski, Eden Brown, and Rose Fabia canvassing in Virginia Beach to support Alex Askew –  a young, innovative, principled delegate elected in 2019. Alex’s voting record is superb and personally – he’s delightful. The Republicans, who view VA Beach as ripe for retaking, are running heavy media ads against Alex.  And, unlike NOVA, VA Beach does NOT have a canvassing tradition. Alex needs our help!

Sharon Shutler will provide hotel options.  And more importantly – as a native VA Beach local, Sharon will arrange for dining options and promises they will be good!  Please contact Sharon Shutler at shutlersharon@gmail.com to sign up.

Wednesday, December 1st, 6:30pm – Save the Date!

NARAL ProChoice Virginia Student Advocacy Fellows House Party Jane Materna and Susan Dykstra will co-host a house party in support of the NARAL Virginia Student Advocacy Fellows program. The SAF is a paid fellowship for Virginia college students to study and practice reproductive freedom advocacy. At this time we plan to host the party virtually to mitigate the pandemic. The good news about hosting it virtually is that more of our alumni fellows will be able to attend “in person” so you’ll get the chance to talk with them one-on-one! To sponsor one fellow, the house party or for questions about the fellowship program contact Jane Materna (jmm@orgcapacity.com) or 202-669-9370.
