Boom! Boom! Boom! What the hell was that?
1:48 a.m. Pre-dawn. Neighbors wake up to noise, rush outside. Squad cars everywhere within minutes. Car crashes into local pizza joint, tree destroyed. Shooting victim, the driver, bullet in the neck, critically wounded yet tries to flee. Tosses cocaine, money and his gun into a yard.
The gun violence epidemic, having already ravaged families, neighborhoods and towns near and far, is right outside my door. Another gang shooting. We’re still safe for now, but who is next?

Boom! Boom! Boom!
9:30 a.m. Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, on lockdown. Active shooter situation. Multiple victims. Some say “this is the price of having the Second Amendment.” Others offer thoughts and prayers. And while we go around in circles and hope for legislation, ask yourselves again, who is next?

It seems as though every week, the news gives us a fresh reminder of the importance of this work. But every day, gun violence inflicts tragedies that don’t make the front pages. Our kids deserve an America where their homes, their neighborhoods, and their classrooms are safe places to live and to learn. The vast majority of the American people believe in commonsense reforms to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the dangerously mentally ill.
