Democracy Can’t Wait … One Last Shot in the Fight for Voting Rights

Later this week the census data will be released, allowing states to begin drawing new maps for state and federal districts. If passed before the Senate recess, the For the People Act will ensure fair districting, keeping our communities whole and ensure our communities can thrive for the next 10 years and beyond.
Nationwide, progressives are demanding Senate action on the For the People Act, a once in a lifetime bill that will ensure fair districting, make voting easier and more accessible, and take on dark money in politics. Call our Senators daily, Padilla (202-224-3553) and Feinstein (202-224-3841) to insist that the Senate addresses voting rights before they adjourn.

Please call both Senators daily! Example scripts are below.

Stop the Recall Sundays! Phone Banks Begin Now.

Ballots drop August 16th so it’s time to get our folks out to Vote NO and Stop the Recall. We’ve got Stop the Recall yard signs and window signs and we’ll be hosting Sunday 3-5 phone banks from now until election day. Turnout is critical so if we don’t get out the vote, the 62% of Californians who voted for Gavin Newsom will be swept aside by this cynical effort to grab power through a recall that they could never win through a general election.
All it takes is 50% + 1 to Vote “Yes’ ‘ on a recall and the polls show it’s terribly close!

Join us on a phone bank or text bank, send postcards or canvas. You can find all these opportunities on the Stop the Recall link tree along with the Zoom link for the Sunday Stop the Recall Phone Banks
Imagine a governor with as little as 10-15% of a very low turnout election replacing an elected Governor with a record of bold reform! Now, let’s get out the vote to make sure that never happens!

Also, join our friends at Indivisible Northridge in a virtual meeting this week. They’re hosting a state-wide event/action Wednesday, August 11 from 7:30 pm – 9 pm PST to give everyone focused actions they can take to support Governor Gavin Newsom to stop the recall. RSVP at

Check out our event calendar at virtual events and actions and the Indivisible Yolo linktree and the Stop the Recall linktree for example scripts and more.

We need to contact our Senators daily and tell them voting protections can’t wait! As soon as this week after Census data is released, Republicans will start gerrymandering- as many as 1 in 2 voters nationally could be impacted. We need Senators to fight for our democracy. They should not go on recess while leaving our democracy in danger.

Tell our Senators: Don’t go on vacation until you’ve protected our democracy!

And ask your friends to contact their Senators too- you can find resources for friendbanking at (including some sample scripts for texting a friend!).

Sample Call Script for Sen. Feinstein and for Sen. Padilla:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a California voter from [CITY, zip code] and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo.

I am calling today to ask Senator [Feinstein/Padilla] to say that the For the People Act needs to be passed before the August recess. I need Sen. [Feinstein/Padilla] to convince [her/his] colleagues, especially Senators Coons, Carper, Manchin, and Sinema, that this is a choice between keeping the filibuster or keeping our democracy.

To add for Sen. Feinstein: Sen. Feinstein pledged that the filibuster would not get in the way of passing the For the People Act. Now it’s beyond urgent to pass S1, and we need her to step up and convince her colleagues that they need to act now. Thank you.

To add for Sen. Padilla: I appreciate that Sen. Padilla has been outspoken about the need to eliminate the filibuster and pass the For the People Act. Now I need him to convince his colleagues that they have to act now. Thank you.
