Trump and the Proud Boys in Westchester
Sharing this write up from our friends at Indivisible New Rochelle:
“As you may be aware, this week we saw too much of Trump in Westchester. On Wednesday night Trump was honored with a game of golf and a banquet at the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck. And the next night, Trump hosted a fundraiser for the New York GOP at his Briarcliff Golf club.
Members of various Indivisible and other groups protested these events. We are grateful to everyone who showed up – it was important to fight back and say NO to normalizing Trump. On Wednesday evening the GOP was caught off guard, especially as it was the activist voices that were heard on the local news. Click below to see the Channel 12 spot where Shannon Powell, leader of Indivisible Westchester, speaks about how this sort of event “normalizes” Trump’s behavior.

Thursday, perhaps in response to the media attention on Wednesday, GOP support arrived outside Briarcliff. And that included the Proud Boys. The Proud Boys is a designated hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an important group of “very fine people” at the violent 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlotteville, and they were organizers of the 1/6 insurrection.
LoHud then carried a story about the pro- and anti-Trump protests on Thursday night. The author neglected to mention anything about the presence of Proud Boys. Rather the article focused on the numbers of Trump supporters, crowd size. Accompanying photos showed members flashing white power hand signals to the camera with no LoHud commentary. The images of their huge banner demanding the release of jailed insurrectionists, who they consider political prisoners, was posted with no context. Just free advertising for the Big Lie.

Members of several Indivisible groups took notice of the LoHud article early on Friday morning and comments got added online and soon after letters to the editor started hitting the inbox of the Editor in Chief, Mary Dolan. Our message to LoHud was consistent and sound: LoHud had missed the major news story, that the counter protesters had been members of the Proud Boys, a designated hate group. The article normalized their presence and purpose at the fundraiser. Several hours later, the Editor in Chief of LoHud issued a retraction of that article along with a correction, which you can read here. It may seem like a small thing, but this is remarkable. This is how we change the narrative. Too much about the January 6 insurrection, the role of hate groups, and white supremacists, is being whitewashed by a complicit GOP. We couldn’t let our local media do the same so we demanded that they correct the record, and they did. In the process we adopted the hashtag for the GOP’s embrace of these groups and the Big Lie- #InsurrectionWhitewashers – for those on social media, please use it. We need to call it out, give it a proper name. This is how we change the narrative.”
