We welcome the President’s remarks today calling the passage of the For the People Act a “national imperative” and calling on the Senate to send this bill to his desk. While we applaud his efforts to date, President Biden must do even more to use the full weight of the office to pass the For the People Act and to protect the freedom to vote at this critical crossroads for our nation.
Since the 2020 elections, we’ve seen extremist state lawmakers in 47 states introduce more than 380 anti-voter bills. They’re passing anti-voter bills that attack our freedom to vote and attempting to take over our elections so they can continue to rule for the wealthiest few. We cannot out-organize, out-register, or out-litigate these deliberate barriers to voting, which disproportionately target Black, Brown and young Americans.
Texas Democrats had to flee the state to prevent draconian voter suppression bills from being passed. There is no more time to wait. We must end the filibuster to protect voting rights and the American democracy for generations to come.
The Senate must cancel recess and stay in session until the For the People Act is passed and signed by President Biden.
