For the People Act: the time is now

S.1- For the People: the time is now!

Hi Indivisibles,

As you all know, we’re approaching the Deadline for Democracy as we need to see voting rights moving forward out of the Senate before the summer break in mid-July or the chances for stopping any of the voter suppression and gerrymandering tactics prior to the midterm will likely be lost.

Without this, the efforts to hold the Senate and the House next year will be all the more difficult! So please join us for a month of Sundays in June at 5PM on Zoom (link). Fixing Our Democracy simply can’t wait!

Senate Majority Leader Schumer says he still plans to get S.1/H.R.1 (the For the People Act) to the floor in June. Even with Manchin’s public position, we can’t stop demanding voting rights. It’s time to call our Senators (again) and demand they step up! And time to get our friends and family members to do so as well. Remember S.1 is more than voting rights and access; it’s also about getting money out of politics and getting ethics back in! We need to keep up the pressure and demand action!

Unfortunately, Sen. Manchin is not the only roadblock. Sen. Feinstein made the news (in a bad way) last week, according to Forbes:

  • Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) broke with colleagues who have said they would “choose democracy” and scrap the filibuster if Republicans tried to block H.R. 1, Democrats’ sweeping election reform bill, telling Forbes, “If democracy were in jeopardy, I would want to protect it,” but “I don’t see it being in jeopardy right now.”
  • Feinstein said she wants to “wait and see what happens” with H.R. 1, and, when asked if there are any filibuster reform measures she would support, said, “I’d have to take a look. Right now, nothing comes to my mind.”

The call scripts for calling Feinstein or calling others to call (aka friend-banking) will be on the link tree as usual:, or see below for example call scripts. Since Sen. Feinstein refuses to understand how important this is, please keep calling every day to let her know!

For our state legislature action this week, we’re contacting Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry to tell her to restore AB 339: Protecting Public Participation. This bill would have expanded access to local government meetings like city council meetings, by ensuring that people could participate by phone and internet from home, and it would have expanded language interpretation availability. To our great disappointment, Assm. Aguiar-Curry was instrumental in weakening the bill so that it doesn’t apply to city councils and boards of supervisors with populations less than 250,000 (that means us, her constituents!); added a sunset date in 2023; removed translation and interpretation services, and made access available through internet OR (not AND) telephone. We’re calling to ask her to undo the changes she made that directly impact her own constituents.

Tell our Senators: We must pass the For the People Act!

Sample Call Script for Sen. Feinstein:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a constituent from [CITY, zip code] and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo.

I am calling today to demand Sen. Feinstein protect voting rights and to roll back many of the onerous voter suppression tactics being implemented by state houses across the land. We must pass S. 1, the For the People Act, when it comes to the floor this month.
I’m calling to insist that Senator Feinstein do everything in her power to pass S. 1 before the Senate recess. It’s now or never. I’m asking her to talk to her colleagues with the urgency the issue demands and to understand that anti-democratic legislation and voter suppression are truly dangerous. I want to see the Senator using her influence to pass the For the People Act. Thank you.

Sample Call Script for Sen. Padilla:
Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a constituent from [CITY, zip code] and I’m a member of Indivisible Yolo.

I’m calling to thank Senator Padilla for his consistent support for S.1 – the For the People Act.
I urge the Senator to use his influence to keep the bill strong, don’t let it be stripped of its key provisions, and get it passed in the Senate this month.
The Senate needs to pass S.1 now to protect our 2020 Federal elections. This is no time to compromise Democracy! Thank you.

Assm. Aguiar-Curry: restore AB 339!

Sample Call Script for Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry:

Hello, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a voter and and I live in Assembly District 4, my zip code is [zip code].
I am calling in support of AB 339, by Assemblymember Lee. I’m calling to express disappointment in the amendments imposed by Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry in the Assembly Local Government Committee. These amendments exclude me and everyone in our Assembly District from having the right to participate by telephone or internet in local government meetings so that we don’t have to overcome barriers such as travel, taking time off work, and arranging childcare. I am calling to ask that these restrictions be removed so that people in Assembly District 4 can have the same rights as others.
