Hello Ventura Indivisians,
Great news! Our free immigration legal fairs, Swap Meet Justice, are back with our amazing coalition of immigration professionals and community volunteers! Our first “post-covid” fair will be June 6th, then resume every last Sunday of the month, including June 27.
We were thrilled to learn that over the COVID hiatus, several people became citizens with the help they received at our pop-up clinic!
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!

Your Calls to Action:
Friday, was the second act of the Jan. 6 insurrection. The Senate GOP just used the filibuster to block a commission (more info)
The GOP ignores both the pleas of the Capitol officers who protect them every day, and of a mother of Brian Sicknick, who died as a result of his injuries from the insurrection.
Action #1 – Tell your legislator we need a House select committee (more info)
Minimal script:I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep. [___] to encourage Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi to create a House Select Committee to investigate the Jan. 6th insurrection.
Rep. Brownley: email, (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
or Rep. Carbajal: email.(CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348
Share with family and friends – Who is their representative/senator?: https://whoismyrepresentative.com
Action #2 – Write emails to President Biden and Attorney General Garland(more info)
We’ve provided a sample letter here, but we have a strong feeling that Joe, at least, would appreciate you sharing your heartache at what happened on Jan. 6th in your own words as well. What happened that day was a violation of our capitol, our spirit, and our pride in our country. Let them know.President Biden – email
Attorney General Garland – email – in the “Please choose general topic” box – select “Message to the Attorney General”
Action #3 –Send postcards/letters to Sens. Manchin and Sinema (more info)
We’ve provided a sample letter here, click in and scroll down a bit.Sen. Manchin: 306 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington D.C. 20510
Sen. Sinema: 317 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510
Utility companies are using AB 1139 to kill CA’s rooftop solar industry. Our legislators are letting it happen! (more info)
This bad legislation just slid through the Assembly Appropriations Committee! Make sure your assemblymember AND YOUR STATE SENATOR are prepared to do the right thing and bring it down! We just called our assemblymember’s office and we’re told they are studying this NOW! Get on the phone. Email them too. Make sure they know that this is important to us.
Action #1: How many ways can we say “NO” to AB-1139? (more info)
Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Assemblymember/Senator [___] to vote “NO” on AB 1139. This bill is an attempt by the utilities to kill rooftop solar and grab more profits for themselves. Net Metering helps every one and I expect the Assemblymember to vote against AB 1139. What is their position on this bill?State Senator Monique Limón (SD-19): SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, OX (805)988-1940 email
State Assemblymember Steve Bennett (CA-37): SAC (916) 319-2037, SB (805) 564-1649, VTA (805) 641-3700 email

Action #2: Sign “Save California Solar’s” petition to Governor Newsom (more info)
Join us in telling Governor Newsom to stand up to the utilities! Sign this petition here.
Low-income communities have borne the brunt of systemic racism in our financial institutions. A public bank can help change that. “YES” on AB 1177 (more info)
Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] to tell Asm./Sen. [___] to vote “YES” on AB 1177 when it comes before you. This bill is important to me. ”Providing adequate banking services is a social responsibility of any decent, humane and economically efficient society — and AB1177 is a partial recognition of that fact.“
State Senator Monique Limón (SD-19): SAC (916) 651-4019, SB (805) 965-0862, OX (805)988-1940 email

Who owns American history? The GOP’s battle against Critical Race Theory and what we can do about it (more info)
Educators say the history of systemic racism in this country and the contributions of Black people have been erased. “The curriculum was never designed to be anything other than white supremacist,” Julian Hayter, a historian and an associate professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia, said, “and it has been very difficult to convince people that other versions of history are not only worth telling. They’re absolutely essential for us as a country to move closer to something that might reflect reconciliation but even more importantly, the truth.”
Tell your legislators to vote against any legislation that suppresses accurate scholarship on America’s history
Minimal script: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen. [___] to know that I’m a fan of accurate historical scholarship and disapprove of those who misuse our nation’s laws to censor or suppress knowledge that makes them uncomfortable. Please ask him/her to vote “NO” on [Rep. – HR3046 & H.Res.397/Sen. – S.968] or any similar legislation put forth.
Rep. Brownley: email, (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779
or Rep. Carbajal: email.(CA-24): DC (202) 225-3601, SB (805) 730-1710 SLO (805) 546-8348
AND Senator Feinstein: email, DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

Share with family and friends – Who is their representative/senator?: https://whoismyrepresentative.comCall again! Tell your senators to pass the H.R. 1620 – the Violence Against Women Act! (more info)
Although the latest version of “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act” just passed the House, 172 GOP legislators voted against it because it expands firearm restrictions against abusers or stalkers, and added protections for gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Now, it’s off to the Senate and a fight to get to 60 votes. Call your senators and be sure your friends and family in RED places call theirs.
Minimal Script for DEM senators: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to strongly support the H.R. 1620 – The “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act.”
Minimal Script for GOP senators: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to support the H.R. 1620 – The “Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act.” I understand that 172 GOP representatives voted “NO” on this important bill in the House, and I want the Senator to know that their reasoning wasn’t acceptable to me.
Senator Feinstein: email, DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

Share with family and friends – Who is their representative/senator?: https://whoismyrepresentative.comCall again! Ask our legislators to support the THRIVE Agenda! (more info)
Even Sen. Manchin (!!!) has stated that Biden’s plan falls short of the revolutionary change that needs to take place to “build back better.” While the Washington Post reported that Biden proposed spending $2.25 trillion on the first part of his jobs and infrastructure plan—with the two-part package possibly topping $4 trillion—the THRIVE Act would invest $10 trillion over a decade. Ben Beachy, director of the Sierra Club’s Living Economy Program stated “To match the scale of the crises we face, piecemeal solutions won’t suffice.”
Minimal script to Reps. and Senators: I’m calling from [zip code] and I want Rep./Sen.[___] to know that I want [him/her] to support the [Rep.-H.Res.104 /Sen.-S.Res.43] – the THRIVE Agenda to ensure a bold, inclusive recovery, and democracy reform which includes legislation such as H.R. 1 and H.R. 51, removing the filibuster as necessary. (Add anything that makes this legislation personal for you, your family or friends, if you can.)
[Rep. check here. Brownley and Carbajal have NOT signed on yet. Senator-check here. Padilla IS a cosponsor (thank him!), Feinstein hasn’t signed on yet.]Rep. Brownley:email, (CA-26): DC (202) 225-5811, Oxnard (805) 379-1779, T.O. (805) 379-1779

Minimal script to President Biden: Dear President Biden, thank you for creating a bipartisan alliance with the American people, and not the GOP legislators, who no longer even pretend to care about democracy or our best interests. The American Jobs Plan is exciting, but we need you to go bolder. Instead of restoring us to where we were before COVID-19, we need a recovery package that is as big and interconnected as the crises we face. The THRIVE agenda can take our country past our historic inequities towards a green economic recovery that will positively reshape America’s future, long after this pandemic is forgotten. (Add anything that makes this legislation personal for you, your family or friends, if you can.)

Call again! Call your senators to vote “YES” on UFW-supported H.R. 1603 – the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, a long-delayed “thank you” for the essential workers who bring us our food. (more info)“Farmworkers need immigration reform so they can work in the fields without fear.” Fear – hardwired into the fruits and vegetables we enjoy quietly in our homes. Do better, America. This is a problem we can solve.
Minimal Script: Hello, I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to vote “YES” on H.R. 1603 – the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which supports a path to citizenship for aspiring Americans working in agriculture, young aspiring Americans, and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. Thank you.
Extra credit – If you haven’t already called on H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act of 2021, another UFW priority bill, please do so now. Scripts and information here. Or do it again!

Keep calling! Call VP Harris and ask her to rule the filibuster unconstitutional (more info)
Minimal Script: I’m [calling/writing] to ask VP Harris, as presiding officer of the Senate, to rule that the filibuster is unconstitutional. Its 60-vote supermajority requirement for the enactment of general legislation is in violation of Article V, the 17th Amendment and the constitutional presumption of majority rule as prescribed in the Constitution. VP Harris: Email : http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/, Comments: 202-456-1111, Switch Board: 202-456-1414, TTY/TTD: 202-456-6213, Letters/postcards: The White House, Office of the Vice President,1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20500
Tell your senators that we expect them to make changes now!(more info)
Minimal Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to let Sen. [___] know that I’ve just finished (calling/writing) Vice President Harris to ask her to rule the filibuster unconstitutional. The American public is done with the Senate’s dysfunctional legislative graveyard. This procedure must either be abolished, or substantially reformed, as it’s anti-democratic for a minority to be able to permanently block bi-partisan House legislation, especially bills related to basic democracy, like voting access and equal rights. I’m asking [him/her] to immediately engage in collaboration to reform the Senate from the legislative bottleneck it is now to a functioning body, which may include time limits, the “talking filibuster”, and majority-vote carve-outs for bills that reform and protect democracy.
Senator Feinstein: email, DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430

KEEP CALLING! The “H.R. 1/S.1 – For the People Act” is now in the Senate! Call your senators!(more info) Reach out to your senators, no matter which side they’re on
Minimal script for DEM. senators: I’m calling from [zip code] to thank Sen. [___] for cosponsoring and supporting S.1– For the People Act. Please ask the senator to be prepared to use a targeted filibuster to pass this bill and others related to the basic foundations of our democracy, such as H.R.4 – The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act and H.R. 51 – Washington DC Admission Act.
Minimal script for GOP senators: I’m calling from [zip code] to ask Sen. [___] to support S.1– For the People Act. Addressing corruption, the protection of voting rights, and reforming of campaign finance should be bipartisan priorities to make our democracy better for all Americans, regardless of their political affiliation. Now, GOP-controlled states like ours are passing ugly and embarrassing Jim Crow-style laws, and I expect Sen. [___] to find the moral fortitude to stand up against them by voting for S.1.
Senator Feinstein: email, DC (202) 224-3841, LA (310) 914-7300, SF (415) 393-0707, SD (619) 231-9712, Fresno (559) 485-7430
