This email contains two items from Common Cause:

  1. Follow-up to Sandy Ma’s presentation earlier this week
  2. Common Cause’s training on redistricting

1. Follow-up actions from Sandy

On Tuesday, May 4, we had a zoom session with Sandy Ma, the Executive Director of Common Cause, and 30+ Indivisible members.

Sandy shared the different bills that Common Cause worked on this past legislative session, including AVR (Automatic Voter Registration), the Sunshine law, reducing government employee pensions if they’re convicted of a job related felony, 12 month cooling off period for departing legislatures before they can register as lobbyists plus more good stuff. Her work on pushing thru these bills makes a difference in all of our lives here in Hawaii. Thanks so much.

The next step is to let Governor Ige know which bills we support and don’t support. Sandy has asked that we contact Ige and let him know that we support 3 bills and oppose 1. She has documented how to reach the Governor and the talking points you may want to share with him or his staff.

Please take the time to do this last step so we can ensure the bills are passed or vetoed. Download here to see Sandy’s talking points.

2. Redistricting training

This three-hour training offered by Common Cause is designed for all levels, whether you are new to redistricting or have been working on it for years. This training will include a mix of presentations and exercises where you will learn about how to engage in redistricting with participants in your region. We will walk through presentations and materials that you can use to organize your community.

Download here for class details. It’s offered on two different dates – Wed, May 12 and Sat, May 22
