The following statement is being made by a coalition of organizations in the San Francisco Peninsula and South Bay, including the Gandhi Team, Indivisible SF Peninsula and CA-14, Mid Peninsula Solidarity Sundays, North Peninsula Democratic Club, Peace Action of San Mateo County, Peninsula Progressive Action Group, San Mateo County Democracy for America, and the Raging Grannies Action League. Also signing as an individual is John McDowell, former Vice Chair, San Mateo County Republican Party.
It is abundantly clear that Trump not only incited the failed insurrection that took place on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in Washington DC, he delayed the deployment of the National Guard to defend the US Capitol during the attack. Trump pointed a violent mob towards the Capitol and left it vulnerable, with the aim of disrupting the electoral college vote count and maintaining his rule in office. The results were deadly and could have easily been catastrophic. He is a traitor to the United States of America, and as a first and absolutely imperative step, he must be removed from office immediately and barred from future office.
There is no time to lose. We must act now before his followers can regroup and instigate further violence on the Capitol, state capitol buildings or elsewhere. We must act before extremists in the GOP and voices in the media succeed in deflecting blame for the chaos from Trump, downplaying the events with calls for “unity” and “moving on,” and deflating efforts to hold all those responsible accountable for their actions. And we must act because we need to make clear in the strongest possible terms that an attack on our country, by any group or any person — even if he is the president — will result in an immediate response and severe consequences.
Accordingly, we demand that Vice President Pence and members of the Cabinet immediately invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Donald Trump from office. We ask Congress to expedite impeachment resolutions already drafted and move them to a vote as soon as possible. We demand that the Senate reconvene and take up these articles of impeachment.
And to our fellow Peninsula and South Bay residents, this is no time to remain silent or sit on the sidelines. We ask that you call your elected officials now. Make your voices heard. This president must go.
