We’re still keeping a full calendar of remote events. Check https://indivisibleyolo.org/calendar/ for the most up-to-date information on actions and events you can join!

Hello Indivisibles,

It was a devastating blow to hear of the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday.

It becomes clearer every day just how much is at stake in the upcoming election. We hope you’ll join us to honor Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy by doing the work. We will be holding a special phonebanking session on Zoom TODAY, Monday Sept. 21st at 4-6pm. We’ll make calls for Senate candidates who will safeguard the Supreme Court.

Our response is always to get down to work. When Trump visited Sacramento last Monday, Indivisible Yolo and Sister District CA-3 folks countered by rolling up their sleeves. On Monday alone, 84 phonebankers made 2656 calls to voters to get Trump out of office, and even more joined phonebanks throughout the week. We’re ready to keep fighting now and until the election.

Scroll down for further details on the special phonebanking session in honor of RBG, and for call scripts for our actions of the week. This week, we’re telling our Senators to block Trump from filling Ginsburg’s seat. And in the lead-up to the election, we can’t lose sight of the atrocities that are happening even today. We’ve seen the reports of horrific abuses at the Irwin Detention facility in Georgia- including reports of forced sterilization without consent. We’re telling our Members of Congress to demand the Irwin Detention facility in Georgia be shut down, and that the CBP does NOT get additional money when Congress votes on a continuing resolution to fund the government this week.

Would you like company making calls to representatives or doing the action of the week? Join our Virtual Action Coffee Zoom meeting Monday mornings at 10 am: https://zoom.us/j/721847201. We’ll talk through Indivisible Yolo’s action of the week, call or email our representatives, talk politics, and stay connected to each other and the work in this challenging time.

Now’s the time to get involved! We have phone banks, text banks, advocacy calls, postcard meetups and more, all online via Zoom. We’re doing more than ever – in spite of the pandemic – as we count down to the most critical election of our lives. Our events are on the Indivisible Yolo calendar here: https://indivisibleyolo.org/calendar/.

Reminder: our next General Meeting is next Monday, Sept. 28th at 7-8:30pm on Zoom. The agenda for the meeting may include consideration of endorsements for one or more candidates running for an office in Yolo County on November 3. If endorsements are considered, the decision to endorse a candidate will be made by a vote of the members of Indivisible Yolo. Each candidate in a competitive race for the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, the Davis City Council, the Woodland City Council, the Davis School Board and the Woodland School Board received an Indivisible Yolo Candidate Survey. (Responses received to the survey will be posted before the meeting.)

Take care, and take action!

-The Indivisible Yolo Team

P.S. if you have not yet signed up for “Protect the Results”, a coalition of groups (including Indivisible) to mobilize if Trump should contest the results of the election, you can do so HERE.

Action: Special Event: Phonebank in Honor of RBG

From Sister District CA-3:
First we grieve, then we act. Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death on Friday night left us devastated, worried, and anxious. Many of us took time out to reflect on her remarkable life and legacy. We attended vigils, fretted over articles about the impact, and posted on social media. We grieved. But now we must act. This Monday, Sept. 21, we invite you to a special phonebank in honor of RBG. We will be calling in support of two Democratic candidates who are in surprisingly close races against GOP incumbents: Theresa Greenfield in Iowa and Barbara Bollier in Kansas. (We picked two women on purpose. We think Justice Ginsburg would be pleased.)

WHAT: “Thank You RBG” Phonebank for Democratic Senate candidates in Iowa and Kansas
WHEN:TODAY, Mon., Sept. 21, 4-6pm
WHO: You! We welcome newbies and veterans alike.
ZOOM: https://zoom.us/j/804500806

At this phonebank, we will take a moment to hear memorials from our Sister District CA-3 and Indivisible Yolo community. But we will focus, in true RBG fashion, on the country-changing work that must be done now. We’ve been clear from the start that we are in a multi-pronged fight for our country. Our strategy has always been: win the White House, take back the Senate, defend the House, and flip statehouses blue. It’s becoming increasingly clear there is no higher priority than electing a Democratic majority in the Senate.

Action: Tell your Senators – Block Trump from filling Justice Ginsburg’s seat!

Sample Call Script for Sen. Harris and Feinstein:
Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am a constituent from [CITY/ZIP CODE]. I ask the Senator to please block any attempts by Trump to appoint a new nominee to the Supreme Court. Justice Ginsburg’s dying wish was to not be replaced until after the election—help honor that wish by keeping her seat open.

If they ram through another Supreme Court justice anyway, I want the Senator’s commitment to expand the Court in the next Congress. Thank you.

Background:
From Indivisible SF: https://indivisiblesf.org/call-scripts/2020/9/18/hold-justice-ginsburgs-seat-open

On Friday, September 18, 2020, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away.

A few Republican senators have said they won’t vote to confirm a new Justice until after Election Day, but we don’t expect the Republicans to play by their own rules. We need to demand that our Democratic senators hold strong to prevent them from confirming another Justice.

Action: DEMAND INVESTIGATION OF ICE DETENTION ABUSES

Sample Call Script for Rep. Garamendi:
(If you’re in an area of Yolo county represented by Rep. Matsui, THANK her for calling for an investigation, and ask her to call for the immediate closure of the Irwin facility and to oppose additional funding for CBP)

Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am a constituent from [CITY/ZIP CODE]. I’m extremely concerned about the reports of medical neglect, including forced hysterectomies of immigrant women, at the Irwin Detention Center in Georgia.

Will Representative Garamendi call for an immediate on-the-ground investigation by the Office of Inspector General, and the immediate closure of the Irwin facility? And will he also commit to opposing the request for additional funding for CBP in the upcoming continuing resolution? We know that the level of disregard for human life seen in Irwin is the direct result of privatization and dumping billions of dollars into a cruel and unaccountable system. We simply must not funnel additional money into any part of such a system. I will be closely watching for the Representative’s actions on this and following up.

Sample Call Script for Sen. Harris and Sen. Feinstein:
Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I am a constituent from [CITY/ZIP CODE]. I’m extremely concerned about the reports of medical neglect, including forced hysterectomies of immigrant women, at the Irwin Detention Center in Georgia.

I wish to thank the Senator for signing on to the September 18th letter demanding an investigation into these abuses. We need for you to go further and insist on the immediate closure of the Irwin facility and to reject any moves to increase funding for CBP or ICE. We know that the level of disregard for human life seen in Irwin is the direct result of privatization and dumping billions of dollars into a cruel and unaccountable system. We simply must not funnel additional money into any part of such a system. I will be closely watching for the Senator’s actions on this and following up.

Background:
https://indivisible.org/demand-your-representative-investigate-detention-abuses
A brave whistleblower recently filed a complaint alleging “jarring medical neglect” within the Irwin Detention Facility in Georgia, including a refusal to test immigrants who are detained there for coronavirus, and an alarming number of hysterectomies performed on immigrant women held in the facility. These horrifying new allegations follow years of carefully documented medical neglect within immigration detention.
We’re following partners on the ground, including Project South and Georgia Detention Watch, and expect to learn more about the specifics of what’s happening at Irwin over the coming days, but we have more than enough information right now to take action–to demand an investigation and to ensure that more money isn’t funneled into this desperately dangerous system.
Specifically, we’re asking that you:

  • Demand your senators and representative publicly call for an immediate on-the-ground investigation by the Office of Inspector General. They need to be loud and unapologetic since the OIG has said ICE detention facilities are too unsafe for them to enter.
  • Demand your senators and representative publicly demand the immediate closure of the Irwin Detention Center. Period.
  • Tell your representative that when the House votes on the continuing resolution next week, they must REJECT the request for extra money for CBP. Remember: DHS still has the ability to move money around, so ALL the pieces of the anti-immigrant enforcement machine are linked.

Action: Pick a phonebank and/or information session and attend (remotely)!
