The writer of Friday’s letter to the editor, aside from the cynicism and mocking of a prior letter-writer, is troubling when he states, “American patriots will step in to re-establish law and order.” Really? In our current political environment, individuals should be careful when they start designating themselves as “American patriots” because they are supporters of Donald Trump.

As a Vietnam veteran, I was in Vietnam in 1968 when Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King were gunned down in cold blood. Afterward, there was tremendous upheaval in the U.S. with major cities such as L.A. and Detroit on fire. The Democrats were in power in 1968 and they were voted out of office because the upheaval took place on “their watch.”

The upheaval which is going on today is a result of President Trump stoking the fires of racism. He has divided this nation like no other president in history. All of this is on his “watch.” Donald Trump wants us to believe that the upheaval (i.e. fires, looting, killings etc) is on someone else’s watch but not on his own. He will not acknowledge his many failings (e.g. pandemic, job losses, upheaval in cities). Trump let the pandemic spread like wildfire throughout our country without a well-conceived plan. Joe Biden did not create this upheaval and Biden’s record does not reflect Trump’s attempted portrayal of a Biden presidency.

President Trump does not have a plan for the next four years other than more of the same which means more upheaval and distress. Don’t we have enough problems in our lives without Trump’s personal 24-hour TV drama program?

Yes, Trump is placing our democracy in peril and in contrast Biden has proven himself as a thoughtful and decisive leader.
