Political⚡Charge
I’ll admit it. I’m getting kind of excited.
For a while now, I’ve been getting increasingly concerned that either the summer or the polls showing that Republicans are not looking good have been psychologically lulling people into thinking that we’re going to be fine in November. I’ve based my concern on what topics seem to be getting traction (and not) on social media and which of my articles here at Political Charge are getting attention.
When I looked, it seemed that the only thing anyone was interested in was posts about dunking on Trump. And while I admit to enjoying those tweets, they hardly spur people to take action, which is what my purpose is here. I want people to see that Trump is down and redouble their efforts to register more voters, get involved with a campaign, or some other action.
There were days when I thought about whether or not I should just slow down, stop pushing out the daily posts to encourage people to take action, and figure out some reduced schedule.
But I took some time to review the reasons why I’m here, writing day after day. And you know what? I really do believe that activism by ordinary citizens is how we improve our government and our society. I really do think that energizing Democratic voters to take action is the right path for me in this moment in our nation’s history.
I have a note next to my desk that says: There will be ups and downs. Be persistent.
So I kept writing. I write so that at some point, when someone is looking for ways to help, Political Charge will be there for them and show them a path they can take. And I’m really glad I kept up with it, because I’ve seen some encouraging signs.
Over the past few weeks, my 2018 article about how folks can help get voters registered has been getting anywhere from 800 to 1,500 views a week. Just in the last week, my posts about how to flip certain Senate seats (especially Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn) have been gaining traction, too. Out of nowhere — I haven’t been reposting them or sharing them. My favorite stats, though, aren’t just that people are reading the posts, but that they’re then sharing them on Twitter and Facebook.
I’ve had an increase in people reaching out to me, either through social media, or though email, to ask me specific questions about how to get more involved with certain efforts. And I love that!! I think the November election suddenly became real and present for a growing number of folks.
I wanted to share that with you all, because I know you’re here because you are deeply concerned about the direction our country has been going, and you want to see that change. People are starting to wake up to the fact that the election is nearly upon us. Before this month is done, we’ll be 100 days out from the general election. It is becoming real to them.
So, I want to thank you for being here with me, and encourage you to share posts that encourage people to take action. If you’ve been doing that, consider encouraging your friends to subscribe. As you know, it’s free — I’ve never asked for a dime and never will. Let’s get more folks energized about November and show them how they can take just a few minutes here and there throughout the week to make a meaningful difference.
