THE TIPPING POINT
Harvard political scientist Erica Chenoweth studied hundreds of civil resistance movements and made a stunning discovery: every single time a nonviolent campaign grows enough to actively involve 3.5% of the population, it succeeds. 3.5% of the population of America is 11.5 million people. The Black Lives Matter protests are the largest in American history, surpassing even the records set by the Women’s March. Recent polls put the total numbers of protesters between 15 and 26 million. Another hallmark of successful campaigns is that they use varied methods in addition to protest. What we’re doing on the electoral side is just that. Supporting the movement by making sure every passionate voice translates into a passionate vote against racism, against brutality, against inequality. We’ve just crossed the threshold. In four months we could score a massive victory for the movement – for the Resistance – and for American democracy. As Churchill said: If you’re going through Hell? Keep going!
