Dr. Anthony Fauci is without a doubt the most trusted person in government today – sporting an 80% approval rating for his honest, decisive handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
The most important thing Dr. Fauci does is that he acts on science, never politics. He gives state legislators and governors the facts and guidance they need to keep us safe, and he refuses to repeat Donald Trump’s lies, even when standing right next to him.
For that reason, Trump is now suggesting he could fire Fauci at any minute.
As head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Fauci has waged a 36-year struggle to contain some of the deadliest disease outbreaks in modern times: H.I.V., SARS, Zika, Ebola – just to name a few.
His expertise and calming presence during the current pandemic has earned him the moniker “America’s Doctor,” begun by a New Yorker profile, because he’s exactly who we needed in these trying times.
With Dr. Fauci gone, Americans would have no one in the Trump administration we can trust to give us honest, unvarnished facts and guidance during this pandemic. We would be completely alone.
So would the Democratic governors and state legislators urgently working to keep us safe. All they’re getting from Trump himself and his allies are petty political attacks and score-settling, and with thousands of lives hanging in the balance, Americans deserve better than that.
