The Committee to Elect Jamie Cheek officially launched the Sego Lily Coalition, an initiative to support down-ballot candidates across the state. It marks the campaign’s first step in their plan to build a sustainable foundation of grassroots support that will lead to future Democratic victories across the state.
The Utah Democratic Party recently announced that over 100 candidates are seeking the party’s nomination in municipal, county, state, and federal elections. Cheek’s campaign recognizes that many of these candidates, like Cheek herself, are running as political outsiders; and the challenges these candidates face have only become more prominent as candidates do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Cheek remarked on Thursday: “As our communities continue to fight COVID-19, the importance of electing ethical and compassionate leaders is clear. Since announcing my candidacy in September, I have had the privilege of meeting the candidates throughout Utah who personify that type of leadership. But, [candidates] know that due to a lack of commonsense contribution limits at the state level and campaign finance loopholes at the federal level, free and fair elections have become anything but free for candidates. That is why my campaign is taking action to level the playing field between incumbents and political newcomers with this coalition.”
The Sego Lily Coalition provides participating campaigns the opportunity for a collaboration of talents and resources to meet the electoral challenges of each district. Coalition partners include: Jamie Cheek, U.S. Congress, District 1; Zach Moses, Gubernatorial; Kevin Probasco, State Attorney General; Holly Gunther, State House, District 3; Mary DaSilva, State House, District 4; Cheryl Nunn, State House, District 16; Katherine Nicholson, State House, District 18; Kerry Wayne, State House, District 29; Mohan Sudabattula, State House, District 42; Aaron Dekeyzer, Salt Lake City Council, District 6.Â
Membership in the Sego Lily Coalition does not constitute an endorsement of candidates between the Committee to Elect Jamie Cheek and participating candidates or between any participating candidates. Members simply share a dedication to their communities and to working together so the people of Utah can hear their messages for a better, more reflective government.
Jamie Cheek is seeking the Democratic nomination for Utah’s First Congressional District. She is running because our communities deserve a Representative who will protect Utah values and represent their interests in Washington.
