Call To Action

DemCast is calling on residents of Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina & Utah to create a sign and take a picture or very brief video of yourself, to be included in a hopefully-viral compilation video targeted at Senators from these states – ones who may be most vulnerable to our collective influence.

If you are a resident of one of these states and would be potentially willing to participate, please read on. If you are from elsewhere but have connections in these states, please forward this post to them.

Our goal is to convince these Senators that their constituents expect them to hold the line against McConnell, who would surely scuttle the trial if he had the 51 votes necessary to do so. Democrats need four or more Republicans to join them in demanding that the rules for the eventual Senate trial lead to a robust and maximally impartial proceeding.

DemCast will compile all of your submitted photos & videos, stringing them together into separate video montages for each individual Senator, and push them out hard on social media to ramp up pressure.

Mitch McConnell has clearly indicated an intent for the Senate to execute an expedited impeachment trial – one that results in Donald Trump’s acquittal. He (now famously) said that he is “not an impartial juror. This is a political process.”

This is obviously problematic. While impeachment is in fact a political and not a criminal proceeding, it is the solemn duty of the Senate to fulfill its Constitutional obligation to hear testimony and come to a fair determination about whether the President is fit for office – based on the evidence, not the political winds.

So, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats are holding out – refusing to send the articles of impeachment over to the Senate until they know what rules McConnell intends to use for the trial.

In particular, Democrats want assurance that they will be able to call and question key witnesses who have thus far been shielded from scrutiny by the White House, such as Mick Mulvaney, Mike Pompeo and John Bolton.

McConnell needs 51 votes to proceed with the rules he wants, which would truncate the trial. Democrats need four Republican Senators to hold the line.

Our Basic Message

We the people of the United States demand a complete and impartial trial of Donald J Trump. It is not in the best interest of the republic to allow the President to shield his closest advisers from scrutiny. Nor is it the role of the Senate to aid and abet a runaway executive’s obstruction of Congress.

Senators swear an oath to the Constitution, not to Mitch McConnell or Donald Trump. We expect them to uphold it.

What You Can Do

These are the key themes that we want Senators (and the media) to hear via this project:

  • We expect you to do your job.
  • We expect you to uphold your oath to protect the Constitution of the United States.
  • The Senate shouldn’t help Trump succeed in hiding crucial evidence & testimony.
  • If you fail to commit to a fair trial, we will hold you accountable at the ballot box.

The ingredients: 1) A sign. 2) A photo or short video starring YOU (holding your sign). That’s it.

Because these photos/videos will be streaming past viewers’ eyes pretty quickly, the signs you are holding can’t be very complicated. They should have:

  1. The Senator’s name at the top.
  2. A key message. Either: “Do Your Job”, “Uphold Your Oath” or “#NoSenateCoverUp” (this last one will be our hashtag).
  3. Your name and city at the bottom.

Once your sign is created, have a friend or family member take a picture or video of you holding it.

Some tips for taking the photo/video:

  • Be sure that you are in a space with good light that is shining on you and your sign.
  • Hold the sign at chest height for the photo
  • Hold the camera horizontally rather than vertically, as the movie will be in horizontal format.
  • If you want to say something in a video as opposed to just snapping a photo, consider reading one or more of the statements above, under “key themes“. Videos shouldn’t be more than 15 seconds long.

Email your photos/videos to by January 3rd at midnight. Send along any questions as well.
