Thousands Expected at Portland’s Impeachment Rally Tuesday

On the eve of the House’s momentous vote on Articles of Impeachment – the culmination of three years of public outcry, advocacy, and protests – a coalition of grassroots groups is organizing over 550 rallies in cities across the US, including Portland, Oregon.

The goal: make it clear to the Trump Administration and Congress that the public expects Donald Trump to face accountability for his abuse of power and obstruction.

Organizers Expect a Big Crowd

The organizations co-hosting the event on Tuesday in Portland are Stand On Every Corner PDX, Indivisible Oregon, DemCast Oregon, and Nasty Women Get Shit Done PDX.

The event will begin on Tuesday, Dec 17th at 5:30pm on the north end of Waterfront Park (near SW Ankeny St/Burnside Bridge).

At the time of this posting, RSVPs for this event stand at over 2,500 (greater than Seattle’s RSVP total). There are many other rallies happening nearby throughout Oregon and SW Washington for people who can’t make it downtown. (Here is the event search page on impeach.org where the public can find nearby options.)

The rally program will include speakers from Common Cause Oregon, Oregon NOW, the faith community, and the groups organizing the rally. At this historic moment, rally participants will leave the event armed with information and ways to continue to take action. Most importantly, by showing up, protesters will add their voices to the groundswell of support for impeachment, powerfully demonstrating that Americans demand Congress act, because no one is above the law.

Also – there should be some really great sign-watching. (Organizers plan to have a sign-making station on site beginning at 5:00 pm if you can’t make one ahead of time.)

Weather is expected to be dry and chilly – approximately 40 degrees when the rally starts. Rally-goers should bundle up and expect to stand for 60 to 90 minutes. Parking is always a challenge downtown, so participants might want to consider taking Tri-Met.

This is designed and expected to be a family-friendly, peaceful event.

From the event’s Facebook page:

Over and over again, Trump has abused his power and corruptly used his office to benefit himself, including in this most recent pay-to-play bribery scheme. Congress must make clear that nobody is above the law—not even the president of the United States.

Come out to make your voice heard in a peaceful, nonviolent rally calling for Trump’s IMPEACHMENT and REMOVAL. At this historic moment, Portland will join over 400 events around the country supported by national groups like MoveOn, Indivisible, DemCast and Public Citizen.

Both Representatives and Senators need to know that we are watching them at this historic juncture. Republicans and Democrats alike have an equal duty to uphold our constitution, protect our democracy, and impeach and remove President Trump.
