August election amendment alert – Vote yes to save the South Shore Community Center in Miami Beach

2 mins read

Democrats in Miami Beach have asked for help regarding a critical issue on the countywide ballot in August.

The Miami Beach Democrats are asking voters to vote YES on County Referendum – Construction of Fire Station in Flamingo Park on Alton Road in Miami Beach. A Yes vote will save the South Shore Community Center, a Morris Lapidus building. A Yes vote is a vote for our children and seniors.

Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez states “Allowing a new fire station to be built on a small slice of land directly on Alton Road allows Miami Beach to finally save the Morris Lapidus South Shore Community Center, keep a thriving daycare center, and reopen the senior lunchroom. Eventually, we can program the community center for the residents surrounding 6th Street. It is a win-win for Miami Beach.”

Miami Beach Democratic Club member David McKinney proclaims “Locating the fire station adjacent to Alton Road is the perfect solution. It improves emergency response times, maintains essential social services in architectural landmarks, and preserves the residential character of the Flamingo Park Neighborhood.”

Miami Beach Commissioner Tanya Bhatt says “In 2021 the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation named the South Shore Community Center as one of it’s “11 Sites to Save” not only because of its historic significance but also as an extraordinary and rare example of the evolution of the work of Morris Lapidus. With the new proposed site, endorsed by former Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez, current Fire Chief Digna Abello, and union president Captain Adonis Garcia, we are able to provide our community and Fire Department with the Category 5-rated station and public safety resources we all need and preserve our historic legacy when the ability to make those decisions for ourselves is increasingly being preempted by others; we all win.”
