Media and Democracy Project condemns all violence. We are saddened to hear that there was an attempt on the former President’s life. We wish him well in his healing and recovery from physical and psychological trauma. Others were not so fortunate. Our sympathies go out to those who were wounded/killed.

We are living through dangerous times, and Main Stream Media fails to report on the news, but instead creates the news.
We’ve been gaslit for years by MAGA to believe that President Biden is old and feeble. The MAD Substack from July 11, does a great job of highlighting the lead weighted teeter totter giving flight to this narrative. Many fewer articles discussed Trump’s future administrative goals, (Project 2025 / #MAGAManifesto) or the difference between democracy and fascism.
MSM is STILL failing, everyday, to demonstrate that they understand the threat and urgency of Project 2025. Their front pages should provide readers detailed information about the anti-democratic, “post Constitution” GOP plan. Trump is trying to distance himself from it. It should be front page news that over 80% of the plan’s authors were in his past administration, and likely will be in his next administration if he were to become President.
Media coverage of SCOTUS, except as Opinions, has been mute. It seems SCOTUS just rendered null both our Constitution and Lincoln’s words at the Gettysburg Address:
“It is rather for us, the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” (Nikolay copy)
As Dahlia Lithwick recently wrote, “The court granted itself the (democracy-altering immunity decision) imperial authority to confer upon the president powers of a king…” and the power of the people, through their representatives in Congress, has been diminished. With Trump v. United States of America case, the President was granted full immunity for Official Acts, and limited any courts ability to establish motive in future acts. In Loper Bright Enterprises v Raimondo and Relentless v Department of Commerce, SCOTUS once again threw out decades old precedent and seized the authority for the courts to determine policies and regulations, removing expertise and institutional knowledge from regulatory enforcement.

Please call Senator Durbin and ask that he schedule a mark up of the Press Act. Then call your Senators and ask them to support or co-sponsor the PRESS Act.
The PRESS Act (S 2074) is a bi-partisan, nationwide law to shield journalists from surveillance. Freedom of the Press is enshrined in our Constitution, but journalists are, at times, nonetheless subject to government surveillance and harassment. For two decades there has been a bi-partisan effort to pass a strong national press shield law. Almost all states have them but we need a stronger, uniform national law.
Call Senator Durbin’s office, as often as you can, and request that he schedule a markup soon. His number is 202.224.2152.
Sample Script: “I am asking Senator Durbin, as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and sponsor of the PRESS Act (S 2074/H4250) to be scheduled for Committee mark-up as soon as possible. This bill to protect journalists has passed the House with strong bi-partisan support.”Next, call or write your senators to ask them to support the bill or text PAIQYM to 50409.
