Closed Minds, Closed Schools: GOP’s Religious Education Plan

“Florida Republicans float plans to close up to 42 public school campuses”
“A proposal aiming to turn a popular Fort Lauderdale magnet school that focuses on the Montessori teaching method into a neighborhood school brought a crowd nearing 200 people in opposition… dozens of audience members, a sea of blue “VSY’’ shirts representing Virginia Shuman Young elementary, contended the plan would cause an unnecessary “disruption” for a top-rated school.” — Politico

Closed minds. Closed Schools.
“Abbott has also advocated to force people to pay tuition for public schools, which would give the state another means to force Christian Nationalist religious indoctrination into those classrooms. In 2023, Texas passed a law requiring booksellers to use a rating system for a library book’s mention and depictions of sex. The US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law. To date in 2024, Texas has banned 801 books, more than any other state.” — Andra Watkins

Project 2025 scheme to gut public education
- Title I, the $18 billion federal fund that supports low-income students, would disappear in a decade.
- Federal special education funds would flow to school districts as block grants with no strings attached, or even to savings accounts for parents to use on private school or other education expenses.
- The U.S. Department of Education would be eliminated.
- The federal government’s ability to enforce civil rights laws in schools would be scaled back.
The proposals are contained in comprehensive policy agenda that’s part of a Heritage Foundation-led initiative called Project 2025: Presidential Transition Project, which includes nearly 900 pages of detailed plans for virtually every corner of the federal government and a database of potential staffers for a conservative administration. It will also feature a playbook for the first 180 days of a new term. — Ed Week

Education attacks women’s rights and sexuality
“The call for eliminating equity and diversity initiatives (SOGI, CRT) reflects the specific fears they voice so loudly: the fact that America’s youth are embracing broader conceptions of gender and sexuality, as well as women’s rights, including reproductive rights, and that more white Americans than ever, including youth, are acknowledging that structural racism and white supremacy remain embedded in the tissue our nation as unfinished business.” — Stop The Coup 2025
Christo-fascist reality
Texas public schools must display donated “In God We Trust” posters.
Texas allows Young Life to conduct Bible studies in public middle and high schools. At least 409 Texas public schools welcome this religious program.
TakeAway: Make sure that the taxes you pay go to support a quality public education for your kids not religious indoctrination. Vote for Democrats!
