April 2024 – Amendments approved for ballot, local leadership updates

2 mins read

Yesterday, the Florida Supreme Court approved language for two major ballot initiatives:

  • Voting Yes on Amendment 4 would reverse the 6-week abortion ban that is soon to go into effect.
  • Voting Yes on Amendment 3 would permit the possession of recreational marijuana.

Both amendments will require at least 60% support. Also on the ballot will be the opportunity to remove some of the Supreme Court justices who attempted to block these amendments from moving forward.

These ballot initiatives only add to the importance of the upcoming elections in August and November. The local Democratic Party is working diligently to ensure voters are informed AND registered to vote by mail. Please remind your friends to re-enroll at votefromhome.miami to receive mail-in ballots. (Note: enrollment was reset by Republicans)

Leadership updates

  • Acting Chair: Laura Wagner, our previous Program Chair, was appointed Acting Chair for the Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee on 3/26. Wagner was instrumental in implementing and coordinating volunteer activities during the 2016-2020 elections. Wagner’s first priority is to gain approval by the DEC of redistricting maps ahead of the August 2024 elections, followed by overseeing elections for a new DEC chair within the next 40 days.
  • Field Director: We are thrilled to welcome Alex Monnier Hernandez as our new Field Director. Monnier Hernandez brings experience in relational organizing and field strategy implementation, polling and opinion research, and bilingual communication. Monnier Hernandez has worked on campaigns and in firms across several states, helping to elect and advise candidates at all levels, from City Council to the Presidency.

Preparing for the 2024 elections
To turnout voters for the amendments, while unseating Senator Rick Scott and various local Republican legislators, we count on your support.

Please consider making a donation of $20.24 to bolster our local campaign staff and coordinated efforts. Your contribution will make a meaningful impact as we engage with voters.
