Trump had a longtime feud with the Arizona Republican, and the tension between them drew national attention during the 2016 Republican presidential primary, when Trump said McCain was not a war hero because he was captured and held for more than five years in a North Vietnamese prison.

“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said at the Family Leadership Summit in 2015. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” Cindy McCain said Trump’s comments were hurtful to her family and other veterans. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it; I’ll be honest,” she said. “But I’m the wife. That’s my prerogative. I don’t have to.” – Time

President Biden blasts Hur for suggesting he does not know when his son Beau died

The president grew particularly emotional recounting a line from special counsel Robert K. Hur’s report that suggested he did not recall the year in which his son Beau had passed away. Beau Biden died of cancer in 2015, when his father was vice president.

“There’s even [a] reference that I don’t remember when my son died,” Biden said. “How in the hell dare he raise that?”.The president said he remembers his son’s death every day. “Frankly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself it wasn’t any of their damn business,” he said. “I don’t need anyone to remind me of when he passed away.” – Washington Post

There’s only one way to talk about Gold Star parents: with honor and respect

Khizr Khan, the soldier’s father, lashed out at Mr. Trump in an interview on Saturday, saying his wife had not spoken at the convention because it was too painful for her to talk about her son’s death.Mr. Trump, he said, “is devoid of feeling the pain of a mother who has sacrificed her son.”

Gov. John Kasich of Ohio castigated Trump on Twitter. “There’s only one way to talk about Gold Star parents: with honor and respect,” he wrote, using the term for surviving family members of those who died in war. – NY Times

Take Away: Honor those who have laid down their lives to defend American democracy. Stop would-be dictators and their cronies from insulting their families.
