Democrats support humane and effective immigration policies.
Republicans just want to demagogue the issue.
According to a 2022 Pew Research Center survey, Republicans and Democrats differ over the most pressing priorities for the nation’s immigration system. Pew concludes that while Republicans place particular importance on border security and deportations of immigrants who are in the country illegally, Democrats place greater importance on paths to legal status for those who entered the country illegally – especially “Dreamers”, who entered the United States as children and have contributed greatly to the U.S. economy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many stories were shared and published of heroic actions performed by Dreamers as essential workers and otherwise.
Pew Research Center also found that most Americans, whether Democrat, Republican or independent, want Congress to provide a comprehensive immigration policy with two key priorities: increased border security and legal status for Dreamers.
Appallingly, Congressional MAGA Republicans have the same view of immigration as their cult leader, Donald Trump:
- Immigrants from “European” countries – our doors are open!
- Immigrants from “s-hole countries” (Trump’s words) are “poisoning the blood of our country” (spoken earlier by Adolf Hitler, lately by candidate, Donald J. Trump).
At a rally in New Hampshire, Trump declared that if he were to get a second term as president, he would order a sweeping round-up of what he calls “illegals”, confining them to detention camps before deporting them. The New York Times describes his plan as “an assault on immigration on a scale unseen in modern American history.” His plan even involves deporting millions of people who have called the United States their home for decades, often since early childhood. And, he wants to impose a Muslim ban again.
The Biden-Harris campaign calls Trump’s immigration plans “extreme, racist, cruel policies” that are “meant to stoke fear and divide us.”
