Heather Cox Richardson on Changing the Course of History

Many of us gathered together in Davis while others of us joined the nearly 1,000 activists on Zoom for the Bay Area Coalition 2024 Election Kickoff to hear Heather Cox Richardson remind us both of our history and what is at stake in this election.

Drawing the line from the Kansas-Nebraska Act attempting to spread slavery to the western states in the 1850’s to the Dobbs decision overturning the right to abortion, to demonstrate what radical extremists can do if given the power to do so and how important this moment is in our history. And shared the origins of ‘grassroots’ democracy from the 1890’s, fighting against the monopolists and robber barons of their time.

Referring to this new generation of older women as crucial in this moment, she noted that this is the first time in American history that there’s a very large population of older women with the capacity to be active and the social networks and skills to be effective. Political elites aren’t asking, what are older women gonna do? And because they are not being factored in, they are a “great invisible force” that can change the course of history. No small task.

She closed by saying that it’s the people on this call- “you’re the ones who are changing the future, you’re the ones who are speaking for American democracy, you’re the ones who are carrying the torch for all those people who gave up their lives in the past to make this country survive … that’s doing the work!”

Carry on!  If you missed it, it’s on YouTube!

Attend LWV Forum to Support NO on Prop 1

The League of Women Voters Davis Area & LWV of Woodland is hosting a forum:

Vote with the League: No on Proposition 1 (March Ballot 2024) on February 7th, 6:00-7:30 pm at Davis Veterans Memorial Center Club Room, 14th St. in  Davis with guest speakers: Clare Cortright, Esq. Policy Director, CalVoices, “Consequences for Mental Health Client Supportive Care Services” and Stacie Hiramoto, MSW, Director, Racial and Ethnic Mental Health Disparities Coalition (REMHDCO).

It’s an important conversation as the Behavioral Health Services Act (BHSA) portion of Prop 1 diverts existing funds from mental health treatment programs to government-financed housing projects and, in doing so, it takes funds from the very county mental health treatment programs currently serving the homeless.  Attend to learn more.

Contact your Senator: Reject Trump-Era Immigration Policies

For months, Senators have been negotiating over what’s called the “supplemental” funding package — additional money the Biden administration requested from Congress to respond to crises around the world. Republicans are playing brazen, dangerous hardball in order to force Trump-era immigration policies in exchange for support for Ukraine, and Democrats are considering caving to their demands.

They haven’t reached a deal yet, but the policies on the table are nothing short of breath-taking: an end to asylum for everyone except the small number of folks who can afford to buy a flight into the U.S., mass deportation — nationwide — without a hearing, and a dramatic increase in the incarceration of asylum-seekers, including families, and a restart to Trump’s signature Title 42 policy.

These policies would be dangerous and harmful enough on their own. But we’re heading into a tough election year with Trump and Trump-acolytes threatening to take back power, we cannot hand them even more tools to inflict their cruel agenda on vulnerable people.

Call your Senator now and tell them to say no to MAGA immigration policies.
