How can AI impersonate other people’s voices? How can AI be misused for voter suppression? How can you be on guard against being duped?
This blog provides an overview – but does NOT intentionally include specific details. It explains what the dark side (like Darth Vader) might do with the technology. I used a free AI app to create message “Don’t fall for sneaky voter suppression tricks. Go vote!” in the voices of Taylor Swift, Snoop Dogg, Cardi B. and Darth Vader. It only took a few minutes to create these recordings with the AI app that seems to have licensed the voices of different celebrities. This blog was inspired by Joyce Vance’s post in Civil Discourse.

How does AI impersonate other people’s voices?
Every person has their own unique voice print. Think of it as a fingerprint, but based on our individual voices. AI programs analyze what an individuals ‘voice print’ is and then use that pattern to say whatever words you provide in that person’s voice. As AI gets more sophisticated, it gets harder to distinguish between a real message and an AI generated impersonation.
The threat of voice impersonation for voter suppression
“The New Hampshire attorney general’s office said it was investigating reports of an apparent robocall that used artificial intelligence to mimic President Joe Biden‘s voice and discourage voters in the state from coming to the polls during Tuesday’s primary election… The apparent attempt at voter suppression using rapidly advancing generative AI technology is one example of what experts warn will make 2024 a year of unprecedented election disinformation around the world.” – ABC News
Punish the guilty
“Federal prosecutors could look at charges, including harassing telephone calls under 47 U.S.C. §223, conspiracy to deny voting rights under 18 U.S.C. §241, and/or conspiracy under 18 U.S.C. §371, depending on the facts they learn and whether they are able to identify those responsible.
Over the years, there have been numerous complaints about mailers to Black communities in North Birmingham telling voters that “their day” to vote was the Thursday following the election or the following Tuesday. Be vigilant
