Abortion Stories From Casualties In The Republican War on Women

“Woman Forced to Leave Texas to End Dangerous Pregnancy”

Dr. Austin Dennard, an OB-GYN and a mother of three from Texas, says she became pregnant with a baby that she “desperately wanted.” When she was 11 weeks pregnant, her fetus was diagnosed with anencephaly, a fatal condition in which a baby is born without parts of a brain and skull. “In Texas, you are forced to carry that pregnancy, and that is because of Donald Trump overturning Roe v. Wade,” she says, speaking directly to the camera. “It’s every woman’s worst nightmare, and it was absolutely unbearable.” – NY Times

There’s nothing better than a personal story to describe the cruelty behind the Republican War On Women. On the 51st anniversary of Roe v Wade, we mapped the stories of twelve women and young girls. You’ll also learn about We Testify, a group that elevates the stories of women who have had abortions. This blog was inspired by Jessica Valenti’s blog “Abortion, Every Day“.

Reproductive Freedom For All

Fifty-one years after the U.S. Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, Americans are being forced to reckon with the nightmarish state of abortion access in the United States, with twenty-one states having eliminated or restricted access because of abortion bans and the very real and often life-threatening, consequences of bans and restrictions across the country. – Reproductive Freedom For All

Republicans have stacked the courts with right wing Christian extremists

Republicans have stacked the courts with judges who believe–and rule accordingly– that pregnant people should die rather than access fundamental reproductive health care. Desperate and out of step with the vast majority of Americans, they are increasingly relying on those judges to reaffirm that belief and circumvent the will of the people. Attorney General Paxton notably fought to make it clear that the so-called exceptions included in Texas’ abortion ban would not apply in cases like Kate Cox’s, forcing her to travel out of state for abortion care after her non-viable pregnancy continued to threaten her life. – Reproductive Freedom For All

Abortion Storytelling

We Testify is an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions, increasing the spectrum of abortion storytellers in the public sphere, and shifting the way the media understands the context and complexity of accessing abortion care. We Testify invests in abortion storytellers to elevate their voices and expertise, particularly those of color, those from rural and conservative communities, those who are queer-identified, those with varying abilities and citizenship statuses, and those who needed support when navigating barriers while accessing abortion care.

We Testify unapologetically believes that people who have abortions are our future. We believe that everyone who has abortions deserves unconditional love and support. We believe that people who have abortions deserve to be in every space where decisions are being made. To borrow from the disability justice movement, there should be nothing about us without us. We are the leaders we’ve been waiting for.
