January 6th, 2024
Dear Friends,
January 6th marks a date in history where mobs of MAGA members, including white Christian Nationalist groups, elected Republicans AND the President of the United States conspired and coordinated an insurrection to stop the peaceful transfer of power. We witnessed an attack on our democracy that will be etched in our memories forever. We will never forget.
2 days after the January 6th insurrection, we captured a historical moment on the Friday Power Lunch that we will also never forget. On January 8, 2021, Congressman Gerry Connolly was a special guest on the show where he recounted for the first time what had happened, and what he experienced first hand during the attack on the Capitol.
We were moved to tears by Rep. Connolly’s raw account about what he witnessed that day and by his resolve to fight for the country: “I am determined, I am not afraid. I will not be intimidated … and I hope you won’t either. We will stand up for the best of what America represents, we will call out its worst. That is the only way we recover from this.”
We will not be intimated. It is up to us. We must stand up every day for justice and truth, for our democracy. Our freedom is on the line.
The winners write history, not the losers. President Biden won the 2020 election. The American people voted, and Joe Biden won. But we all witnessed a few months after a free and fair election, an attack on our democracy. We must not let the losers rewrite history. It is up to us to write it, document it, demand accountability, to never forget what happened and why, and to do everything we can possibly do to save our democracy.
Yesterday, President Biden gave a powerful speech reflecting on January 6th. He said: “America made a vow: Never again would we bow down to a king.” We must recognize: “what was at stake then and now, the right to have our future decided the way the Constitution prescribes it: By We, the People.”
We concur! We will not bow, retreat, or allow anyone to tell us to “get over it.” We will never forget – more importantly, we will continue to take action to protect democracy.
The anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S Capitol, and the continued attempt to rewrite history, to obscure the facts of what happened, and to spread misinformation and dangerous conspiratorial lies warns us that this fight is not over – we must lean in every day for democracy.
