How The Roberts Supreme Court Chips Away At Your Freedoms

You right to drink clean water. Breathe clean air. Your right to vote… See how the Supreme Court is stripping Americans of their freedoms.

Republicans have packed the Supreme Court with right wing activists to pass legislation that the GOP does not have the votes to do, and a majority of Americans oppose. From overturning Roe v Wadeallowing more guns and gutting environmental protections. The Supreme Court grants more rights to the wealthy, while stripping hard working Americans of their rights.

“The Supreme Court has denied a petition from Special Counsel Jack Smith to fast-track a ruling on whether former President Donald Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for any crimes he committed while in office.” – Rolling Stone

Gutting voting rights

The Voting Rights Act is one of the most important pieces of legislation in U.S. history, passed in the immediate wake of the racist violence of state and private actors against civil rights protesters. Activists marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, to make real the 14th Amendment’s right to due process and the 15th Amendment’s prohibition on election discrimination based on race.

Chief Justice John Roberts blew up the U.S.’s hard-won voting rights protections. He issued the ruling for a five-vote Supreme Court majority in the Shelby County v. Holder case stating that the pre- clearance formula enacted in the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965 ― which required certain states to get federal approval for voting changes ― was no longer applicable. He reasoned the policy had been so successful at curbing discriminatory election practices that it was no longer justified.

He was wrong. The justices’ decision reverberates today as Republican-run states — freed from the pre-clearance provision of the Voting Rights Act and inspired by ex-President Donald Trump’s stolen election myth — enact increasingly bold new laws that make it harder for disproportionately Democratic communities to vote and easier for partisan Republicans to subvert elections by purging local elections officials and overturning results they don’t like.” – HuffPost

Stripping women of their freedoms

The Robert’s Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade, declaring that the constitutional right to abortion, upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists.

“Abortion rights will be rolled back in nearly half of the states immediately, with more restrictions likely to follow. For all practical purposes, abortion will not be available in large swaths of the country. Joining the Alito opinion were Justice Clarence Thomas, appointed by the first President Bush, and the three Trump appointees — Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Chief Justice John Roberts, appointed by President George W. Bush, concurred…” NPR

TakeAway: Elections have consequences. You may get extremist justices determined to strip away your freedoms. Next time, vote for Democrats.
