Dear Friends,
This year we lost a dear friend of the Friday Power Lunch, Linda Hirshman (Legal scholar, cultural historian, and author). This week’s Power Lunch, Shining the Light on What Matterswill start by discussing Linda’s life and legacy and the 7-point playbook she outlined in her 2022 article, The Fight for Democracy Will Be a Long, Long Haul. Linda’s work has been a source of affirmation, reflection, and inspiration for our work at Network NOVA.
We will then move on to shining the light on a few important matters:
- Senator Mamie Locke (SD 23 and Senate Caucus Chair) will help shine a light on the fight for our rights in Virginia. She’ll talk about the first bills the Democrats have put forth for this upcoming legislative session, especially the constitutional amendments on 1) reproductive freedom and 2) restoring voting rights to returning citizens
- Cody Conner (Activist Dad and TikTok Influencer) will talk about being compelled to speak in support of his trans daughter at school board meetings, the importance of finding your voice and sharing your convictions online even if you are a reluctant TikToker.
- Federico Cura (Northern Virginia activist) will speak about the role of moral sensibilities in messaging. He will discuss why he believes “moral messaging” can be used to engage and motivate voters.
