- CHANGING THE FUTURE STARTS NOW
Election Day 2024 is a year away. We’ll be voting for President, deciding which party controls Congress, and choosing who will run our state and local governments. Our voter-engagement activism throughout the year will influence whether or not we have people in office who will uplift the lives of all Americans, protect our rights, and further the cause of justice. Each of us spending some of our time doing some of this work will, collectively, really matter. Mobilize.us lists events and volunteer opportunities that we can sign up for. Let’s bookmark it and make a note to visit it and choose an activity once a week, once a month, or whatever we have time for, between now and next November. - CHECKS, BALANCES, AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
We don’t know who will win the presidency in 2024. If President Biden wins and he has a Democratic-majority House to work with, we’ll see less MAGA extremism and more progress. If Trump wins and Democrats control the House, they can block much of his agenda and do a lot, as it did last time, to hold him accountable. Either way, it’s imperative that we flip the House from Red to Blue in ’24. Here are some organizations we might consider working with to make that happen:· Swing Left· Volunteer Blue· Indivisible· Movement Voter Project· House Blue in ‘24 (for donations)
- TELL OUR MOCS TO PREVENT A SHUTDOWN
A government shutdown would hurt many vulnerable individuals and families, yet Republicans in Congress are still posturing and bringing forth legislation that has no chance of passing in the Senate. Let’s tell our MoCs that we need a clean appropriations process that puts the interests of people over politics, and to do everything possible to make sure that the extremists are not holding the government hostage with their unreasonable and unpopular demands.
- MEDICAID FOR EVERY CHILD
Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) has introduced the Medicaid for Every Child Act, which, if passed, would automatically enroll all children through age 18 in Medicaid, ensuring that every child will have access to health care, while preserving parents the choice to enroll them in alternative health insurance programs. Let’s tell our U.S. Senators to cosponsor S.2816 and see that this bill reaches the Senate floor. And let’s tell our U.S. Representative that we want companion legislation introduced in the House.
- SPEAK OUT AGAINST CONGRESSIONAL DEAL CHANGING ASYLUM LAWS FOR UKRAINE AID
According to a report from Politico, Democrats are considering Republican proposals to change asylum law in order to get Republicans to agree to pass aid to the Ukraine. The changes discussed include re-implementing the Remain in Mexico policy, which requires people to wait in dangerous camps on the Mexican border until their claims are processed, and raising the threshold of demonstrating credible fear, which would result in many more people being deported back to dangerous situations. Let’s tell our MoCs that we don’t support these proposals and remind them that asylum is based on international law.
CORRECTIONS AND UPDATES
Unfortunately, this entry was incomplete in yesterday’s List. Here is the corrected entry. Thanks to our readers for keeping us honest!
- RAISE AWARENESS FOR WIC
The WIC program aims to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care.” About half of America’s babies are served by WIC. Studies have shown that this important program has contributed to fewer premature births, fewer infant deaths, better child nutrition, improved cognitive development, and more. Yet, the WIC program, just as it was the last time MAGA House Republicans were on the brink of shutting down the government (see here and here), WIC is in danger of running out of funds. Let’s tell our Members of Congress to fully fund this humane, life-saving program, and let’s use and share this Fund WIC social media toolkit. h/t Chop Wood Carry Water We can also contact Congress using this tool from Moms Rising Together.
