Abortion is on the Ballot

The theme of the August 25, 2023 Friday Power Lunch was Abortion is on the Ballot. The  Democratic House Caucus recently released an ad that drives this home.

Our guests discussed what is happening in rural Virginia on the issue of abortion access and how candidates are addressing women’s healthcare rights on the campaign trail.T

he opening video was the Resistance Revival Chorus’s cover of folk legend Woody Guthrie’s anthem, All You Fascists Bound To Lose, a rallying cry as potent and galvanizing today as when Guthrie wrote it in 1942.REV. LAURA M. GEORGE (Executive Director of The Oracle Institute) discussed a different type of ordinance brought to Grayson County from outside sources that is based on the 1873 Comstock Act. Rev. George explained how this ordinance is purposely being tested in a Blue area to get to the Supreme Court and discussed the role of evangelical churches in making this happen.

JADE HARRIS (Candidate for Senate District 3), EMILY SCOTT(Candidate for Senate District 1) and JENNIFER WOOFTER (Candidate for House of Delegates District 52) spoke about how they are addressing women’s reproductive rights in their campaigns and how that includes birth control access.  Also discussed was the importance of not leaving ballots unchallenged and focusing on convincing the middle instead of advocating to people who will never change their minds.
