IY at Davis Farmers Market:  Happy Anniversary, IRA!

On Wednesday August 16th, eight Indivisible Yolo volunteers hit the Davis Farmers Market to celebrate and amplify the amazing benefits of the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) that was passed a year ago by Democrats with NO support from the GOP.
Even though it was very hot, we set up our new blue canopy tent lined with banners Celebrating the IRA’s benefits: Major Climate Action, Lower Prescription Costs and    Over 9 Million New Jobs!
Wearing our matching VOTE T shirts and hats, we invited folks to “spin the wheel” for a prize and learn more about the IRA benefits. Our spin the wheel was a big hit with the kids, and both parents and kids enjoyed trying out the solar hat fans we were giving away! We had plenty of folks stop by including Lucy Brazil, Rep. Thompson’s Yolo County District Representative and Dennessa Atiles, our own wonderful Northern CA Senior Regional Organizer.
We had almost 50 conversations about the IRA and/or telling the Indivisible Yolo story to our neighbors – some of whom signed up for the newsletter and may turn into future volunteers. We’ll be back to Davis Farmers Market as the weather cools and attendance picks up. Stay tuned.

Voter Registration at Modesto Community College

Want to fight for Women’s rights, voting rights, and end book bans? Registering voters is the #1 most effective way to do all these things! So join us by signing up on Mobilize and we’ll get volunteer rides organized to register voters at the Modesto Community College on August 29 + 30 … sign up now for one or both days!
No experience necessary. We’ll start with a 15-minute training at the staging site and deploy on the campus. We’ll have clipboards, forms, and pens. Just bring your smartphone or tablet if you have one, a mask, a little water, sunscreen, and some comfortable shoes.
NOTE: If possible, wear a liberal-looking t-shirt, hat, or pin! It really helps. Bring a friend! Can’t wait to see you there!

CA-13 & CA-22 Phone Banks

BAC (Bay Area Coalition), which is composed of some 27+ progressive groups including Indivisible Yolo, is already doing weekly phone banks reaching out to voters to identify issues in order to mount more effective campaigns in CA 13 and CA 22 in 2024. Both districts are winnable; and getting folks involved now is exactly what’s needed to win them back.
Simply put, the more often we engage with the same set of voters the more in-tune we become with the nuances of a specific district. Getting involved in a district now by gathering voter feedback on their top issues gives one keener insight and, thus, more confidence in their future voter outreach, either in person or by phone. The phone banks, organized by BAC and CADEM, are scheduled for Wednesdays from 2:30-4:30 and you can sign up via Mobilize here.

Rebalance the Courts!

  • Sen. Padilla: 916-448–2787 (Sacramento) 202-224-3553 (D.C.) (email)
  • Indivisible Yolo is among 50 groups who have signed on to a letter to Sen. Alex Padilla asking him to support efforts to rebuild and rebalance the federal judiciary. We’re calling on him to use his key role on the all-important Senate Committee on the Judiciary to call publicly for an end to the obstructionist blue slip practice, which stands directly in the way of this important aim.
  • “We see the straight line between the abuse of blue slips and the installation of poor-quality, ideologically driven lifetime judges in states with Republican senators. Examples include the now-infamous district judges Aileen Mercedes Cannon of Florida (whose incoherent rulings in the Mar-A-Lago classified documents case were overruled by the Circuit Court), and Matthew Kacsmaryk of Texas (who is trying to destroy the personal autonomy of women by banning a proven twenty-year-old drug, mifepristone).”
  • Please call Sen. Padilla and ask him to call publicly for an end to the blue slip practice that is preventing the appointment of qualified judges while hand-picked MAGA judges make extreme, ideologically driven rulings.

Support State Workers!

Members of SEIU Local 1000, which represents almost 100,000 California state workers, have been protesting and trying to negotiate a contract with fair working conditions. And more than two dozen members of the California legislature have signed on to a letter to Gavin Newsom in support of state workers looking for better pay and working conditions. But not our State Sen. Dodd and Assemblymember (and Assembly Speaker pro Tempore) Aguiar-Curry!
It’s important that our members of the CA legislature speak up in support of state workers (and to tell Gov. Newsom about that support!)
