- ANOTHER INDICTMENT
Yesterday we learned Donald Trump has been officially indicted for his attempted coup on and before January 6th, a crucial step towards finally bringing him to justice. The details are chilling. We also got new polling results indicating Trump and President Biden are in a dead heat. It is critical for our future that Donald Trump never be allowed to hold power again. Let’s get a free subscription to legal commentator Teri Kanefield’s blog for clear, ongoing explanations of Trump’s legal woes, and let’s join #FieldTeamSix in their efforts to register voters ahead of the next election to make sure he stays a defendant, rather than president. - CALL OUT GOP REPS FOR INCORPORATING CLIMATE DENIAL INTO 2024 SPENDING BILLS
Just as July 2023 has broken heat records and scientists across the world are attributing global heat waves and unsettled weather to climate change, four of the funding bills voted on by the House GOP aim to take funds away from the Biden Administration’s environmental programs. Let’s tell our Republican Reps that we know that climate change is real and we expect them to support the administration’s efforts to address it.
- CLOSE ICE DETENTION CENTERS:
While candidate Joe Biden vowed to end for-profit detention centers, President Biden has done little on this issue. These detention centers, or concentration camps, are notorious for maintaining abusive, inhumane conditions, while generating profit for private prison companies like Geo Group and CoreCivic. Let’s contact newly-appointed Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) PJ Lechleitner and tell him to end contracts with the private prison industry. Let’s also join the ACLU in asking him to “order a new, comprehensive review of ICE detention facilities for health, safety and due process issues — and swiftly act to close abusive facilities.” We can address our letters to: Hon. PJ Lechleitner Acting Director, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, 500 12th Street SW, Washington D.C., 20536.
- RAISE THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE
The federal minimum wage has not increased since 2009, and stands at a measly $7.25 an hour. Meanwhile, a living wage for a family of four in the United States—the amount needed for basic needs of food, shelter, and medical care—is more than $25.00 an hour (2022 numbers). The Raise the Wage Act of 2023, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Bobby Scott (D-VA) would raise the federal minimum wage to $17/hour by 2028 (not perfect, but better). It would also extend the minimum wage to tipped workers and others who now receive subminimum wages. The country’s lowest-paid workers would benefit by more than $3,000 a year. Let’s tell our U.S. Senators to co-sponsor S.2488 and our U.S. Representative to co-sponsor H.R.4889.
- ABORTION ASSISTANCE
HuffPost senior journalist Alanna Vagianos shared the following helpful information on social media while covering a discussion being hosted by Congressional Democrats: “If you or anyone you know needs assistance self-managing a miscarriage or abortion, you can call Miscarriage + Abortion Hotline (833) 246-2632 for confidential medical support or the Repro Legal Helpline 844-868-2812 for confidential legal information and advice.” Let’s share this information widely.
