Exposing The Dark Realities of Republican Policies for Rape Victims: PODCAST

What happens to a 10-year old rape victim under Republican policies?

How do you explain what this means in 30 seconds? Listen to this podcast with Ineke Mushovic the founder of Wide Angle Research and how her nonprofit moves conflicted audiences through powerful videos and her advice for progressives on better communication strategies.

Under Republican Rule, states are passing laws to ban all abortions—no exceptions for rape or incest. So what will they say to a young girl who needs an abortion after having been raped? And to her parents? It’s time to fight for our future and our freedoms.

Lessons for better communications

  • Effectively use fear and anxiety (of a Republican-controlled future) to galvanize voters. We should do this in addition to, not instead of, persuasion messaging.
  • Extend beyond playing whack-a-mole across issues and instead create a larger frame (e.g., about how Republican extremism threatens our future and our freedoms)
  • Engage voters at an emotional level—and how that requires both negative and positive framing of an issue (e.g., freedom vs. a state-controlled future, not just freedom)
  • Use narrative formats rather than declaratives when developing political ads,
  • Paint pictures of the future, not just past events.
  • Engage voters by asking them to imagine where extreme policies will lead (rather than telling them what we think)

Keep it simple

Ineke advises making the consequence of policy decisions real. This video describes how parents of a ten year old rape victim react when the doctor says that he may not be able to help their daughter. The man in the red tie symbolizes Republican policies. The video uses simple diagrams rather than video footage of real people which is effective and easier to produce.

Wide Angle Research is a nonprofit research team focused on reaching and moving conflicted audiences through deep listening and innovative policy and persuasion research. It provide data, research, and analysis to ensure that all people have a fair chance to pursue health and happiness, earn a living, take care of the ones they love, be safe in their communities, and participate in civic life. They produce and freely share videos from the REPUBLICAN RULE website.

Republicans used to want to govern. Now they want to rule—no matter the cost. More and more Republican voters are asking themselves: Where do I draw the line? It’s time to join together to fight against a government-controlled future where abortion is banned nationwide, the parents of transgender children are charged with child abuse, books are censored, election workers are terrorized, and the will of the people no longer matters. It’s time to fight for truth, for our democracy, and for our freedoms.

Digital Politics Podcast

Digital Politics Podcast with Karen Jagoda highlights the impact of new technologies on the campaign landscape, how expectations of voters are changing, role of online fundraising, digital and traditional means of persuasion and getting out the vote.  In this time of the COVID-19 Pandemic, changes in the behavior of voters, restrictions on candidates and the new normal for retail politics are all under the microscope.
