Trump indictment: No one is above the law

Trump has been indicted again:https://indivisible.org/resource/donald-trump-has-been-indicted-again
The indictment includes shocking details of how Trump stole classified information he wasn’t supposed to have, refused to comply with efforts to retrieve the documents, lied about having them, and attempted to cover it up and have his lawyers destroy the evidence.
The judge overseeing his case right now is Aileen Cannon, a Trump-appointed judge who previously successfully slowed the investigation. Even so, Trump has gotten away with so much for so long that the indictment is a hopeful reminder of our ideal that no one is above the law. But it’s not just about Trump, and his indictment doesn’t solve everything.
Over the course of decades, Republicans successfully reshaped the judiciary, including the Supreme Court, and are using that power to uphold a system of straight, cis white male supremacy. Roe v Wade was overturned, and even now during Pride Month we witness lawmakers assaulting LGBTQ rights, with conservative judges set to decide on the interpretation and enforcement of laws concerning these rights. If we hope to stem the damage to our civil rights and to democracy itself:
- We need to make sure Democrats are appointing judges. Democrats control the Senate, and they should be working as fast as they can. They should never allow Republicans to block appointments with the archaic “blue slip” tradition that Republicans ignored when they were in power.
- We need our Representatives to support the Judiciary Act of 2023, which would rebalance the Supreme Court by adding four seats. Republicans stacked the court with extremists, blatantly corrupt right-wing Justices who seem to believe they are above the law or any code of ethics. We need to unrig the Court.
Here are some example call scripts for those calls to action:
Sen. Feinstein and Padilla: End the Blue Slip Blockade
- Sen. Feinstein: 415-393-0707 (SF) 202-224-3841 (D.C) (email)
- Sen. Padilla: 916-448–2787 (Sacramento) 202-224-3553 (D.C.) (email)
Example call script (your own words are best!):
Hi, my name is [your name] and my zip code is [zip code]. I’m a voter and a constituent of [Sen. Feinstein/Sen. Padilla]. I urge the Senator to join Senators Blumenthal and Hirono in publicly calling for an end to the outdated blue slip practice that enables Republicans to veto crucial judicial appointments. The affected states need fair and impartial representation. Thank you.
Rep. Thompson or Matsui: Expand the Supreme Court
Contact just your own Representative:
- Rep. Thompson (530) 753-5301 (Woodland) (202) 225-3311 (D.C) (email)
- Rep. Matsui (916) 498-5600 (Sacramento) (202) 225-7163 (D.C.) (email)
Example call script (your own words are best!):
Hi, my name is [your name] and my zip code is [zip code]. I’m a voter and a constituent of [Rep. Thompson/Rep. Matsui]. I’m calling because the MAGA majority on the Supreme Court puts every issue we care about at risk. To safeguard our constitutional and civil rights, I’m asking the Representative to cosponsor the Judiciary Act of 2023 (H.R. 3422) and expand the Court. Decades of conservative court-packing have led to our current situation, and we need to take immediate action to unrig our courts before it’s too late. Thank you.
