Friday Power Lunch

MAKING HISTORY DIFFERENTLY

JUNE 2, NOON

This week on the Friday Power Lunch, we will tell stories about change makers who have forged their own paths and made their marks in history.

You won’t want to miss our opening music video tribute to Tina Turner who passed away last week. Tina made her mark on rock and roll history by singing hard-hitting anthems accompanied by her signature dance moves.

First up, Rebecca Boggs Roberts writes history books about the work of strong women. Her latest book, Untold Power: The Fascinating Rise and Complex Legacy of First Lady Edith Wilson, spotlights a relatively unknown First Lady who wielded power in her husband’s administration. Rebecca’s other books have focused on suffragists, including Suffragists in Washington, DC: The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote.  We will talk to Rebecca about the challenges of writing women’s history.

Lauren Burke, journalist, podcaster and founder of Black Virginia News, will join the conversation by sharing how contemporary women, like their sisters before them, have to work twice as hard as men to get their rightful place in history.

Our guests have something in common beyond writing about badass women. They are both connected to legendary journalist, Cokie Roberts. Rebecca is Cokie’s daughter and Lauren worked for Cokie. We look forward to hearing their stories about how Cokie Roberts left her mark on history.

June is Pride Month. To kick off our celebration of pride month, we are excited to talk to Chris Diaz, Executive Director of Drag Out the Vote, a national organization that works with drag performers to promote participation in democracy.

See you on Friday for a program on making history differently.

Virginia Candidates, Campaign Managers, Field and Finance Directors:

Rideshare2Vote is built to deliver and increase results for Progressive/Democratic candidate’s races! We made waves in the Virginia Elections in 2022 and are here for the June primaries. Through their strategic Partner Program, they can help YOU win. Want to learn more? Email partnerships@rideshare2vote.com or call 888-977-2250

Check out the newly released VA Good Governance Scorecard. This scorecard puts candidates on the record so, if elected, we can hold them accountable on governance issues of concern to voters, whether it be access to the ballot box, amplifying our voices over those of deep-pocketed donors, ensuring ethical guardrails to govern legislative behavior.  They need to hear from their future constituents.  With your help, we can make this year’s election about candidates’ commitment to good governance and a government which works for all voters.  Put in your address, find out who all the candidates are in your district and whether or not they have responded to the VA Good Governance Scorecard. This is an important issue, please check your candidate now!

Virginia Grassroots Coalition Meeting In this critical strategy session, we will be discussing our support of the Power Pack concept – a group of overlapping state and local races where a few of them are key to holding the Senate and flipping the House blue.  Some overlapping races to consider are located in Prince William County (SD 30), Loudoun County (SD 31), Fredericksburg (SD 27), Richmond (SD 16), Hampton Roads (SD 22, SD 24), and Southside Virginia (SD 17). Additionally we will be looking at candidates in a stretch race that may get little support from others. (Jessica Anderson in HD 71 is a great example!) Greens for Jimmy!  Reception in Support of Jimmy Bierman for Supervisor – Co-hosted by a coalition of environmental group leaders!

Climate and the environment need to be addressed at all levels, from local to state, nation and planet-wide – and Jimmy Bierman is by far the best candidate to take action on these issues in Fairfax County.  There are other environment-focused candidates who are running in other districts – with them and Jimmy on the Board of Supervisors, this would be a game-changer for smart growth, trees, water, low carbon and clean energy in Fairfax county. Please join us for this fun and purposeful evening!  We hope you’ll help out for this cause to show your support for strong environmental and climate action in Fairfax.

Russet Perry for State Senate Weekend of Action

Purcellville/Hamilton Launch

Join Team Perry June 3rd for a Weekend of Action Community Launch in Hamilton! Canvassing is the most fun when you do it with friends. Senate District-31 is the top seat to flip this election, and Russet is ready to face the fight head on in November. With everything that’s at stake this election, we need a candidate who understands the challenges faced by the people of this district, someone who’s ready to start working to meet their needs and address their concerns on day one. Russet is that candidate. We need to emerge strong out of this primary, and that starts with getting out the vote! We’ll be launching with Russet at 9:30am in Hamilton at the park and we’ll meet back for lunch (bring a sandwich) and then launch for a second canvass at 1:00pm/1:30pm. There will be coffee available as well as a water jug – please bring your own reusable water bottle so we can avoid single use plastics! RSVP here.
