How to create rapid response political videos with AI

MAGA Republicans take veterans’ benefits hostage. How do you create a rapid response video to mobilize resistance? Use AI.

AI levels the playing field in political communications between grassroots groups and large corporations. Understand how AI works and apply it to get your message heard. It’s fast, easy and very affordable. We created these two videos in English and Spanish, complete with transcripts in an hour using mostly free apps for a total cost of under $5. Here’s how we did it:

Generate image of a veteran as a spokesperson for the video with MidJourney
Recorded a voiceover of the message he should say with an iPhone
Create video with English captions
Translate the video into Spanish along with captions

Generating an image with AI

We used the free MidJourney app to generate an image of a veteran with this description “Handsome American vet with blue eyes looking at camera with determined look”. MidJourney produces different variations of images that correspond to this description. We chose one and then refined it further to get the one we liked most. You can also pick from other similar images that others have created with MidJourney. The images are AI generated so you do not have to purchase an image nor deal with royalty payments.

Create your script

We used a short message for this video. “I fought for America. I had friends who died for America. And now you are taking away my veterans benefits. Shame on you. Republicans. Just wait till the next election!”

This was also translated into Spanish “Luché por América. Tuve amigos que murieron por América. Y ahora me quitáis los beneficios de veterano. Qué vergüenza. Republicanos. ¡Esperad a las próximas elecciones!”

Animate the image

We used an AI program to have the image of the veteran read out the script. Notice in the video that the facial expressions of the veteran change in a lifelike manner to correspond to the script. Converting the image into a video is automatic and only takes a few seconds. Find out more about the AI program we used here.

Create, translate and caption your video

Most people will watch videos on social media on ‘MUTE’, so remember to add captions. We created two versions of the video in English and Spanish.

For the call to action, we added a royalty-free picture of the American flag from Unsplash. We added a link to VoteVets (which was not involved in this project nor endorses this video) as it elevates the voices of Veterans and military families through progressive legislative policies and electoral endorsements that impact the lives of active service members, Veterans, and the country. The videos were assembled using the free iMovie app and uploaded to YouTube.

MAGA created crisis

“With the U.S. Treasury expected to run out of money as early as June 1st, Congress has a responsibility to allow the nation to pay its bills. If Congress does not act and allows a default, the economic consequences would be swift and severe – from plummeting markets, frozen credit, lost jobs and a likely recession, disruptions to critical benefits like Social Security, and soaring interest rates on everything from car loans to mortgages.

Yet House Republicans are holding the economy hostage by passing a bill loaded with unpopular and extreme ransom demands that promise pain for millions of average Americans including veterans, seniors, students, children, workers, and the food insecure. They voted to ship 100,000 high-paying manufacturing jobs overseas while going out of their way to protect wealthy tax cheats and debt-ballooning tax breaks for billionaires and profiteering corporations. The most responsible way forward is to pass a clean bill allowing the nation to meet its prior debt obligation.” – Accountable

VoteVets

Started in 2006, VoteVets PAC and VoteVets Action Fund have been the home for progressive veterans, military families, and their civilian supporters for over 15 years. It is the first organization of its kind and the largest, with over one and a half million supporters in all 50 states. VoteVets uses public issue campaigns to relentlessly lift up the voices of veterans on matters of national security, veterans’ care, and everyday issues that affect the lives of those who served, and their families.
