Charleston Democrats: A Letter From Our New Chair

Dear Fellow Charleston Democrats,

I’m Sam Skardon and last week I was honored to be elected Chair of the Charleston County Democratic Party. I have worked on campaigns of great Democrats like then-Senator Barack Obama, served on the staff of Congressman John Lewis, and have been a candidate for office myself. I deeply believe that the only path to progress in South Carolina is a strong and successful Charleston County Democratic Party.

However, we have a lot of work to do. In 2020 Charleston County voted for President Biden by a 56-43% margin but Republicans still have majorities on our County Council and in our State Legislative Delegation. They hold half our county-wide offices, and a majority of Charleston County residents are represented by a Republican in Congress. My goals as your Chair are:

  • A Democratic majority on Charleston County Council
  • A Democratic majority in Charleston County’s State Legislative Delegation
  • Democrats elected to all county-wide elected offices
  • Charleston County once again being represented by two strong Democrats in Congress from the 1st and 6th Congressional Districts

These goals aren’t just about winning elections, they’re about creating progress and delivering results for our community. If we’re ever going to have great public schools in South Carolina, if we’re ever going to expand Medicaid or protect women’s reproductive freedom, if we’re ever going to build an economy where hard-working families can earn living wages and build wealth; Charleston County Democrats must accomplish those goals. So, how can you help us do that?

1. I ask you to make a recurring monthly contribution of $10, $25, or $50 so we can build the infrastructure of our party. That will cover costs like having an office, purchasing tools we need to operate in a professional manner, and will enable us to maintain a year-round presence so we’re not only reaching out to voters immediately before an election.

Make a recurring contribution to Charleston Democrats

2. We need a strong base of volunteers who can support our events, voter registration efforts, and promote the Democratic slate in every corner of Charleston County. I need you to sign up now as a volunteer so we can become a highly-trained and well-oiled machine long before its time to turn voters out in the next election.

I can’t do this work alone. That’s why we’re so lucky to have three exceptional Vice Chairs who were elected with me: Danielle VinsonSagid Elhillali, and Sydney Van Bulck. We also know we can’t do this alone. We need you to join us. So, again, if you do nothing else, please make a recurring monthly contribution and sign up to volunteer with us. I’m excited to get to work with each of you and thank you for your trust.

Best,

Sam Skardon
Chair
