- #GENERATIONLOCKDOWN RALLIES FRIDAY
On Friday, March 24, 11am – 12:30pm EDT, #GenerationLockdown will rally in Washington, D.C. in support of S.25. Their message is “Come out from hiding under your desks & come to the National Mall to demand Congress #BanAssaultWeapons NOW!” The rally is co-sponsored by Jr. Newtown Action Alliance (those kids who survived 1st grade at Sandy Hook Elementary are now high school seniors*), Newtown Action Alliance, March for Our Lives, March Fourth, Brady, Team ENOUGH, Survivors Demand, Lives Robbed. Let’s go if we can, amplify on social media if we cannot, and support the groups as we are able. Similar rallies will be held around the country as well. - SUPPORT TEACHERS AGAINST “ANTI-WOKE” POLITICIANS
Arizona’s GOP superintendent of schools Tom Horne has launched an “anti-woke” parent hotline where people can report “critical race theory” and other “woke lessons” being taught to kids. The Arizona Educators Association have called for this hotline to be taken down, saying it is politicizing their classrooms and putting teachers under attack. Let’s reach out to this hotline by phone at 602-771-3500 or empower@azed.gov to let Superintendent Horne know we support the teachers and want him to stop his censorship in our schools.
- JUSTICE FOR RASHEEM CARTER
Last fall, a black Mississippi man named Rasheem Carter called his mother and told her he was being followed by white men in trucks who wanted to kill him. Shortly thereafter, he disappeared. His dismembered body was found a month later. The local sheriff has said they do not have evidence of foul play or that he was being followed. Rasheem’s family’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, has called on the Justice Department to open a federal investigation into his death. Let’s contact the DoJ and let them know we want to see this investigation happen.
- DOCTORS FOR RURAL AND OTHER MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES
The bipartisan Physician Access Reauthorization Act sponsored by Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) would, if passed, allow doctors from other countries who are educated and trained here to remain in the US if they practice in communities experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers. Let’s tell our Senators to co-sponsor S.665.
- PANTSUIT NATION NEEDS OUR HELP
In 2019, the wildly successful private Facebook group, Pantsuit Nation (PSN) merged with Supermajority. Last week, with one-day notice, Supermajority shut down Pantsuit Nation, with a membership of 2.8 million, citing budget issues. While still accessible to members, the Facebook group no longer permits posting or commenting. Former PSN staff, moderators, and founders have been vocal asking Supermajority to leave the group open until a new arrangement could be found and that it could be staffed with volunteers, but to no avail. Some of these people have begun a new group, Our Nation, but regaining the original membership is critical to its success. This is too large a group of activists to lose. Let’s help PSN to pressure Supermajority to either open the group back up with volunteer mods and/or facilitate moving it to another nonprofit by contacting its board members: Jess Morales Rocketto (@jesslivmo), Cecile Richards (@cecilerichards), Alicia Garza (@aliciagarza), Ai-jen Poo (@aijenpoo), and Katherine Grainger (@kagrainger).
STATE-SPECIFIC ACTIONS
- MULTIPLE STATES: ASK YOUR GOVERNOR TO PULL CONTRACTS FROM WALGREENS
Governors from 20 states have formed the Reproductive Freedom Alliance to act as a “firewall” against abortion restrictions. California Governor Gavin Newsom has been taking a lead in the fight for reproductive rights by pulling a $54 million dollar contract from Walgreens after they caved to Republican threats and announced they would not dispense abortion pills in certain states – including in states where abortion is legal. Especially if our state is in the alliance (marked in blue on the map in this article), let’s contact our governors and ask them to follow Governor Newsom’s lead, canceling contracts with Walgreens until such time as they reverse their decision to deprive women of needed healthcare.
